How to Turn That Awkward Fridge Gap Into a Stylish Coffee Station Wall
The narrow space beside a fridge is often overlooked, but with a simple upgrade it can become both practical and visually appealing.
This project uses lightweight wood strips to create a removable slatted organizer for mugs and coffee supplies—adding function, style, and a more intentional feel to your kitchen, all without drilling into cabinets.

1. Measure and Plan
Measure the width and height of the space beside the fridge. Transfer those measurements onto a sketch to guide the build.
2. Cut and Prepare the Wood
Cut the cedar strips to size according to your plan. Lightly sand all pieces to smooth the surface and prepare them for staining.
3. Apply the Stain
Brush the stain and finishing oil onto the front and sides of each strip, then wipe off the excess. To speed up the process, group several strips together and stain them at the same time. Allow the wood to dry overnight.
4. Build the Framework
Assemble the main frame following your plan. Pre-drill holes wherever pieces will join, then screw the wood together. A nail gun can be used instead, but screws make it easier to adjust later if needed.
5. Test the Fit
Place the frame in the space beside the fridge to make sure it fits properly before continuing.
6. Create the Slatted Design
Lay additional wood strips across the frame to achieve a slatted look. Pre-drill each strip and screw it into place. These strips also help strengthen the structure.
7. Attach Velcro for Mounting
To avoid screwing into cabinet sides, flip the structure over and apply heavy-duty Velcro along the top, middle, and bottom. This allows the unit to be removable and suitable for renters.
8. Install the Hooks
Flip the structure back over and attach the hooks with screws. If desired, spray paint them beforehand. Hanging mugs first can help decide on the best placement.
9. Mount and Organize
Position the rack beside the fridge and press firmly along the Velcro strips to secure it. Hang mugs on the hooks and place coffee pods or accessories in the cups.

This simple build transforms unused space into an organized coffee station. The removable design keeps it flexible, while the slatted wood finish adds a clean, functional touch that elevates the look of your kitchen.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I'm not a coffee drinker but this a creative way to use that space. Good job! My question is: does the pail holding the pods get in the way of opening the cabinet door? I know you can take it down, but wouldn't that get old over time? Or maybe that side of the cabinet isn't opened very often.
