4 Ways to Get Rid of Weeds for Good (With Stuff You Have at Home)

Tired of pulling weeds only to see them pop right back up? You’re not alone!
These four DIY weed killers use simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen—and they actually work.
Whether you’re dealing with stubborn clover, deep-rooted weeds, or patches that keep coming back, these methods can help you kill weeds naturally, fast, and without harsh chemicals.
Tools and Materials:
- White vinegar (regular 5% acidity)
- Table salt
- Blue Dawn dish soap
- Arthritis rub (must contain methyl salicylate / wintergreen oil)
- Lemon juice (bottled or fresh)
- Bleach (household strength)
- Spray bottles
1. Kill Weeds Instantly with Boiling Water
This is probably the easiest natural weed killer you’ll ever try—and all you need is plain water!
Step-by-step:
- Boil water in a kettle or saucepan.
- Carefully pour the boiling water directly onto the weed, making sure to soak the area around the base to reach the roots.
You’ll see results almost instantly. The leaves start to wilt and curl as soon as the hot water hits.
It’s perfect for sidewalk cracks, driveways, and other spots where you don’t want anything growing back.
✅ Tip: Be cautious around nearby grass or plants—boiling water will kill those too!
2. DIY Vinegar Weed Killer (With a Secret Ingredient!)
Big shoutout to The Chemistry Cachet for this tried-and-true weed killer recipe.
It uses pantry staples—plus one unexpected powerhouse: arthritis rub with wintergreen oil (aka methyl salicylate).
This mix is especially effective on tough, stubborn weeds like clover.
DIY Natural Weed Killer Recipe:
- 3 cups white vinegar (5% acetic acid)
- ¾ cup table salt
- 2 teaspoons blue Dawn dish soap
- 3 teaspoons arthritis rub that contains methyl salicylate (wintergreen oil)
Instructions:
- Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl or jug.
- Pour the mixture into a spray bottle.
- Spray directly onto weeds until fully saturated.
You should see results within just a few hours. We tested this on clover—and it was totally gone by the next day!
⚠️ Be careful where you spray—this mix can affect nearby plants and grass.
3. Vinegar and Lemon Juice Spray
This 2-ingredient homemade weed killer is great when you want something quick, natural, and non-toxic.
It’s especially handy for small weeds or patches in garden beds or walkways.
DIY Lemon Vinegar Weed Spray:
- 1 part white vinegar
- 1 part lemon juice (bottled or fresh)
Instructions:
- Mix equal parts vinegar and lemon juice in a spray bottle. (For example: 1 cup vinegar + 1 cup lemon juice.)
- Shake well.
- Spray directly on weeds until fully saturated—make sure to coat the leaves and the base.
This combo works best on sunny days. You’ll usually see results within 24 hours as the acid from both ingredients dries out the weeds.
🌞 Pro tip: Apply in the morning so the sun can help intensify the drying effect.
4. Bleach (For the Worst Weeds Only!)
This isn’t your first-choice method—but it does work when nothing else will.
Bleach kills weeds fast by breaking them down at the cellular level. It’s best used sparingly, in areas where you don’t want anything to grow back—like cracks in pavement, between pavers, or gravel paths.
Instructions:
- Pour a small amount of undiluted bleach directly onto the weed.
- Make sure to target the center of the plant and the base where it meets the soil.
- Let it sit and avoid rinsing or watering the area for 24 hours.
You’ll likely see leaves curl up within 1–4 hours. After a full day, the weed should be completely dead—even those with deep roots.
🐾 Important: Keep kids and pets away from treated areas until they’re completely dry and rinsed with water.
🌱 Bleach can damage soil and nearby plants, so use this only on isolated weeds you absolutely can’t get rid of.
There you have it—four simple and surprisingly effective ways to get rid of weeds for good using everyday household items. Whether you’re dealing with pesky clover, deep-rooted dandelions, or mystery weeds in your driveway, these methods offer quick results without the high price tag.
Before you go grab the bleach, remember: always use caution around pets, kids, and nearby plants, and test each method in a small area first if you're unsure.

Everybody knows about the vinegar salt Dawn solution. I would never use bleach and pour that on the ground. Also an arthritis rub is introducing chemicals into the ground as well. Unnecessary. All I use is a stronger vinegar and kills everything. Keep it simple.

I tried the cheapest method, hot water. It actually works, I'm boiling more to continue with a lot of weeds along my garage that my landscapers seem to miss regularly :)
