First, grab yourself a dollar store beach mat. This one was $3.50 from Dollarama.
Use a seam ripper to take the stitching out and remove the edging. You can use the mat as it, but I wanted something more neutral.
Cut new edging. I used a cotton linen blend fabric (something I had on hand), but any type of cotton should work.
Cut 3" in width and the length will be the same length as the edging you took off. To get it long enough I sewed 3 pieces together.
Fold about 1/4" on each side and iron, then fold in half and iron so there are no exposed seams.
When sewing, make sure to increase stitch length. A walking foot wood have made this easier, but I used a regular foot and helped feed it through.
Sew all the way around.
Install hooks on your door, window or where you want to hang it. If you don't want to drill holes in your door, like I did, you can use command hooks.
There you go! Now you have blinds that can easily be removed. This solution would also be great for a cabin or RV.

Turning a dollar store beach mat into door blinds is super creative. It’s amazing how you can repurpose simple items like that. A while back, I made some outdoor shades using fabric I found on clearance. It was such an easy project, and it really helped keep the sun out while adding a pop of color to my patio. If you’re looking for more durable options, check out https://www.starblindsact.com.au/outdoor-blinds. They have some great outdoor blinds that are functional and look nice. But your beach mat idea is a fun DIY solution that fits a budget perfectly.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Why did you put hooks in wall and then add the Matt to the inside of the door to cover glass. What are the hooks for? How did you get it to attach to the glass? I’m confused??
Did you use a special needle to sew through the binding? I have a built in walking foot so I can pull that down. Fantastic idea!
Could I just sew the wider fabric OVER the existing binding around the edges without ripping out the original? Seems to me easier and of extra support for the edges, that will get beat up as a door shade that you handle to go up and down. Overall, it's a good look for several uses. Thank You
