We had originally wanted replace our old iron rails but decided to update the old iron rails we already had by sawing off the old scrollwork, sanding off the old peeling paint/rusty spots and then spraying with a special rust prevention paint before finishing it off with oil rubbed bronze spray paint. It was definitely a great "for now" solution, especially until we figure out how to fix our broken concrete steps. For a detailed how to, check out the post!

I am doing the exact same thing right now. I Used angle grinder to cut scrolls, then scraped/grinded/buffed the entire rail. Just sprayed rust reformer on the rail but wanted to see what you did for rust /paint?
How did you sand and remove old chipped paint and rust?
