How to Make a Stunning DIY Modern Table Lamp From Walmart Finds
This project started as one of those “I’m just browsing Walmart” trips that somehow turned into a full-blown DIY moment. You know the kind.
I spotted a few simple items in the bathroom and craft sections and suddenly had a vision: a sleek, modern table lamp made from things most people would overlook.
This DIY modern table lamp is one of my favorite kinds of projects. It’s affordable, super customizable, and honestly… kind of addictive once you see the final result.
Plus, there’s something so satisfying about turning everyday items into something that looks like it came straight out of a designer store.
Let me show you exactly how I made it.
Tools and Materials:
- Empty toilet paper roll
- Wood craft rounds (2)
- Walmart place mat
- Hot glue gun + glue sticks
- Black spray paint (or paint of choice)
- Scissors or utility knife

1. Create the Lamp Base
Start with your empty toilet paper roll and one of the wood rounds.
- Apply hot glue to one end of the roll
- Press it firmly onto the center of the wood round
- Hold for a few seconds until secure
This forms the base structure of your lamp.
2. Paint for a Sleek Modern Look
Take your base out to a well-ventilated area (garage or outdoors works best).
- Spray paint the entire piece black
- Use even, light coats to avoid drips
- Let it dry completely
Black gives it that ultra-modern, high-end feel, but you can absolutely switch it up with white, gold, or even a textured finish.
3. Prepare the Lampshade
Now grab your Walmart place mat—this is where the magic happens.
👉 This hot glue gun kit is perfect for DIY projects!
- Cut off about the bottom third of the place mat
- Take your second wood round
- Apply hot glue along the edge
- Carefully wrap and align the place mat around the wood round
Once the ends meet:
- Glue them together securely
- Adjust as needed to keep it even
4. Assemble the Lamp
Now for the fun part—bringing it all together.
- Add hot glue to the top of the painted base
- Carefully place the lampshade piece on top
- Hold until everything is secure
And just like that… you’ve got a modern table lamp!
Extra Tips for Best Results
Use the Right Glue Amount
Too much glue can seep through thinner place mats. Apply a thin, even line.
Keep It Centered
When attaching the lampshade, take a second to align it properly. It makes a big difference in the final look.
Lighting Idea
Since this is a decorative lamp, consider using battery-operated lights for a no-wire solution.
Totally Customizable
You can easily switch things up:
- Use a different color paint
- Try a patterned place mat
- Add LED puck lights or fairy lights inside

How does the light bulb get electricity? the instructions fail to say what type of light (presumably battery operated?) to use and where to purchase it.
