Makeover Your Cheap, Fimsy Wire Cube Shelving for Cheap
We were given some inexpensive white wire shelves. They were flimsy, and didn't leave any room for our suitcases in our closet. With a little thinking and some zip ties, we were able to make a custom closet. A little copper spray paint would make this look really trendy.
First, we took the old, flimsy set up apart. If you don't have any of these wire squares, they're pretty inexpensive. We also bought some zip ties. Some spray paint could make this piece really pop.
I laid the pieces out to make the sides first. Overlapping one layer, and adding zip ties. This is best explained in the video.
Don't add zip ties to the front row, to avoid them being seen. Add them one row back instead.
Stand up your sides, and add the shelves in.
Add the back. (The sides and back are best explained in the video)
Stand up your shelves and position them in your space to see how much room you have.
See where you'd like to add more shelving. We added a couple shelves above the area that we wanted to keep a large suitcase, and left the bottom open.
Add baskets etc. This would totally work with a rod too.

Zip ties and duct tape have almost replaced baling wire!!! Back when we left the farm to go to school, my husband was very dismayed when he realized he couldn't fix anything since he didn't have baling wire! It didn't take him long to figure out how to get some!!! That was about 55 years ago now!! LOL

Duct tape: the Ying & Yang of Life, a light side and a dark side and it holds the whole thing together. I don't remember where I heard this one many years ago but it is so true.

What will you be storing in the baskets? Depending on what you use the shelves for, you are losing a bit of space using baskets. I use mine for folded t-shirts and sweaters. Every cubic inch is used, but, as you can tell, I'm a bit anal. :) Putting a wood shelf on the top would block the light. And finally, watch the little ones - I rescued my toddler when he'd climbed three shelves high.
The zip ties really helped with the versatility of construction and stability. Great idea!
