How to Turn Candlesticks Into Adorable DIY Mini Lamps
I used to collect candlesticks like they were going out of style. Brass ones from the thrift store. Ceramic ones from yard sales. A pair from my grandma’s attic that I just could not part with. But here’s the thing… I never actually lit them.
They looked pretty sitting there, but they weren’t doing much. So instead of letting them collect dust, I figured out a better way to use them to light up my house. And let me tell you, this DIY candlestick lamp idea is one of those simple projects that feels like a little design secret.
Tools and Materials:
- Candlesticks (metal, wood, ceramic, or glass)
- Battery-powered LED puck light or flame-shaped bulb
- Mini lampshade (clip-on or spider fitting with adapter)
- Strong adhesive putty or removable mounting tape (optional)
- Small shade adapter ring (if needed)
- Decorative finial (optional)

1. Remove the Candle and Prep the Holder
First things first, take out the candle. If there’s leftover wax inside the holder, gently warm it with a hairdryer and wipe it out with a paper towel.
If your candlestick has a deep well where the candle sits, you may want to:
- Add a small piece of wood or cork inside to create a flat surface
- Use removable mounting putty to stabilize your LED light
You want the top to be level so your “bulb” sits straight and your lampshade doesn’t tilt.
2. Add Your Battery-Powered LED Light
Place your battery-operated LED light where the candle used to sit. There are a few great options:
- Puck lights with remote controls
- Flame-shaped battery bulbs
- Rechargeable LED mini bulbs
If it feels loose, secure it with a little removable adhesive. I like using something that can come off easily in case I want to switch things up later.
Make sure the light is centered and stable before moving on.
3. Top It With a Mini Lampshade
This is where the personality comes in.
You can use:
- Clip-on mini shades
- Thrifted chandelier shades
- Custom fabric shades
- Even handmade shades from scrap fabric
These adorable, rattan clip-on mini lamp shades are similar to the ones I used in this DIY. Scalloped edges have been trending lately!
If your LED bulb is flame-shaped, a clip-on shade usually works beautifully. For puck lights, you may need to get creative and attach the shade using an adapter or light adhesive.
Play around with patterns, textures, and colors. A floral shade gives cottage vibes. Linen feels modern farmhouse. Velvet? Oh my goodness, instant cozy elegance.
Styling Tips for Your New Candlestick Lamps
Once you make one, you will want to make five more. Trust me.
Here are a few ideas for styling:
Create Symmetry on a Mantel
Use matching candlesticks on each side of a mirror or artwork.
Add Warmth to Bookshelves
Tuck one into a bookshelf for soft accent lighting.
Mix Vintage and Modern
Pair a vintage brass candlestick with a sleek white shade for contrast.

For Mother Nature's sake, if you are going to try this "hack", please find something that is rechargeable and doesn't keep using expensive batteries that only last a few hours!
