Here’s a super simple last-minute DIY Mother’s Day gift. With just a few tools and materials, I made a photo frame lantern. Read on to see how easy this project was!
Tools and materials
- 4 frames of the same size
- 4 photos
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Package of LED tea lights
How to make photo frame lanterns
Step 1 Remove the backs
I took off the cardboard backs of each frame.
Step 2 Insert the photos
I put the photo I wanted into each frame. I closed the tabs to keep the image in place.
Step 3 Glue the frames together
Then, I glued the edges of the frames and stuck them together so they formed a square box form.
Step 4 Add a tea light candle
I turned on a single tea light and added it to the inside of the frame box.

I made something similar last year, but instead of printed photos, I used a digital picture frame inside the lantern. I found a small one that fit perfectly and just loaded it with pictures. It adds a little movement because the photos change on their own, and it was a fun twist on a classic idea. The glow from the lantern made the screen look extra cozy too.
