Hocus Pocus Spell Book - Three Daughters Home

I don’t know about you, but in our house, it isn’t Halloween until we watch Hocus Pocus! (And this year we got to add the new sequel to our movie line-up!) My 5-year-old is obsessed! And what Hocus Pocus costume is complete without Winnifred’s booooook to complete the look?! This DIY, although a little time consuming, is really not that difficult and super fun! Plus, added bonus; you get an awesome talking piece for years to come. You could even do this with your kids as a fun Halloween project! Keep reading to see how you can make your own Hocus Pocus spell book… 👁️

What You’ll Need: (**everything linked in my blog post)

• thick book (I got mine at Goodwill)
• mod podge
• paper towel
• small Styrofoam ball
• acrylic paint
• paint brush
• molding clay (linking the exact kind I used)
• hot glue / glue gun
• gold puffy paint (linking the exact kind I used)

How To:

Step 1: This first step is optional. (Tbh, I didn’t notice a whole heck of a difference doing it.) Using pictures of the actual HP spell book, I drew lines where the stitching was and tried to rip my paper towel pieces in similar shapes to give the book added dimension.

Step 2: Piece by piece, mod podge your paper towel pieces onto your book and bunch up the paper along the lines drawn. Let dry completely.

Step 3: Cut your Styrofoam ball in half (or buy these already cut in half) and hot glue to your book. I used acrylic paint and a small craft brush to make the eye and red Sharpie for the veins.

Step 4: Make eyelids by mod podging (is that a word?) small pieces of paper towel to the top and bottom of the ball. It should look something like this:

Step 5: Paint your book brown with some acrylic paint. Once dry, add some watered-down black paint over where your fancy paper towel patchwork was done. (See below for a pic of what mine looked like.)

Step 6: Time for clay! Hopefully the picture below helps show the parts I made with molding clay and how I assembled them. You’ll make fingers for along the spine of the book, four rounded corner pieces, the snakes, and (not pictured sorry) the latch for the side and circle around the eye. The trickiest part were the snake coils. If you mess up, you can just roll the clay back out (which I did, quite a few times, lol).

+ PRO TIP: Use a pencil tip to poke little holes in the snakes and add knuckles to your faux fingers! It gives them some added texture and makes them look all the more real once painted.

Step 7: Time to paint your clay pieces. Grab some silver paint for all but the fingers — These you’ll want t paint brown to match the book. I found adding black paint in some of the crevices of the pieces brought some depth and added spookiness.

Step 8: Hot glue all the clay pieces onto your book.

Step 9: Using gold puffy paint, paint on stiches where you drew your original patchwork lines.

And there you have it!

Your very own creepy Sanderson sisters Hocus Pocus spell book! Caution: It is pretty delicate with all that clay on there. You’ll definitely want to handle with care.
