Cement draping and solar lighting create a spooky ghoul for my front yard
I started by creating a frame with a dollar store garbage can for the body, pvc pipe and plastic spray bottles for the shoulders and a soccer ball with a ball cap brim for the head.
I wanted to create my ghoul to sit on a log in my front yard. I covered the log in plastic and found a level spot to begin the project.
I covered the frame with plastic and cut an old blanket into rectangular shapes. I practiced draping the blanket over the frame until I got the look I wanted.
I mixed a slurry of cement and water and dipped the blanket pieces one at a time into the cement. I started at the bottom and worked my way upwards until I liked the way it looked.
After drying for two days I pulled out the frame through the bottom and removed all of the plastic. I made a runnier mixture of cement and water and went over the whole thing by spreading it on with my hands. This created a smoother, almost a melting look and helped to increase the strength. I spray painted the inside black and added solar fairy lights at the top of the head where they are hidden.
This is the final result at dusk.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
did you use cement only? Is this not gonna break?
did you use cement only
When you remove the 'frame' plastic trash cans, ball, PVC pipe, hat, bottles are they reusable to make another? Or do you have to cut them out? I am thinking I could add a flowing gauge body and hang from a tree- and have several hanging from trees.
