Freshen Up Outdoor Furniture With Listerine: A DIY Deodorizing Trick
Ah, the great outdoors! Nothing beats lounging on your patio or deck during those sunny afternoons.
But if your outdoor furniture is starting to smell less “fresh garden” and more “stale attic,” don’t worry—I’ve got a clever solution for you.
Today, we’re transforming your outdoor seating from musty to marvelous using Listerine. It’s simple, effective, and surprisingly budget-friendly. Plus, it’s a great way to utilize something you probably already have at home!
Tools and Materials:
- Listerine Mouthwash (any kind will do—though the original formula is best for this project)
- Spray Bottle (empty and clean)
- Water (just a splash)
- Cleaning Cloths (microfiber or any absorbent cloth)
- Bucket (optional, for mixing if needed)

1. Prepare the Listerine Solution
In a spray bottle, mix equal parts Listerine and water.
If you want to tackle a stronger odor, you can use undiluted Listerine. But for a milder, everyday freshening up, the diluted version works perfectly.
2. Test a Small Area
Before you go all-in, test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area of your furniture to make sure it doesn’t cause any discoloration or damage.
Better safe than sorry!
3. Spray the Solution
Once you’ve confirmed that it’s safe, generously spray the Listerine mixture onto the fabric of your outdoor furniture.
Make sure to cover all areas that need freshening up.
For wooden or metal furniture, lightly mist the surface rather than soaking it.
4. Wipe Down the Furniture
After a few minutes, use a cleaning cloth to gently wipe down the furniture.
For best results, let the furniture air dry in the sun.
For stubborn odors, you might need to repeat the process. Regular maintenance with this method can help keep your outdoor furniture smelling fresh.

I have metal patio furniture and puffy seat cushions on a open covered back porch . I hang cushions by a s hook on top of fence line and then spray and scrub with brush using diluted dawn, then hose with water till clear , let air dry a day or two - works great. I just wipe down the furniture with lightly soapy dish cloth twice a year and let air dry. Works great. Haven't had any rust or bacteria problem . I live in Texas so the cushions air dry easily in heat.
