In my house we don't have any kind of coat closet, mud room or even a hall closet. So there is no place for our shoes and coats and backpacks, except for our bedroom closets. Since they are things that they use every day, they never got put back into the closets, so they usually ended up in our entry way or in our garage. I would tell my kids to put their stuff away into the garage and they would just end up just tossing it out the door. We desperately needed something to organizE all of our stuff, so we put in some mudroom lockers and it's made a world of difference!
Here is the before- seriously this is how our garage looked about 75% of the time. Things just thrown everywhere.
This is how we built it. We cut up several 4x8 feet particle boards with our table saw. We started with the bottom and built our way up
Once the bottom units were nailed together, we put the bench on. I stained it an espresso color.
Next came the walls for the cubbies, we used L brackets for those.
Next we added another shelf, this time for totes. Since it's in our garage I wanted it to have a lot of storage, so I made sure that the shelf would fit the $5 totes that you can get.
Once we finished building up all the shelves, we put on the sides pieces. We wanted them to be a solid piece of wood to hold it all together.
Once the lockers were built, I then taped it and painted it all white. It took 2 coats to get it completely covered.
And that's it for the building part! It's pretty massive, it's about 12 feet wide and just under 8 feet tall.
We added some coat hooks (6 for each cubby) and then filled it up! I added some vinyl to put their names up and some baskets to caught all of those loose things like hats and gloves and little balls.
There is now room for all of my kids' shoes and sports' equipment in there.
All of the hooks make it easy for them to organize their coats, back packs, helmets and more. And when summer comes, I will have them hang up their towels in there so I'm not doing 50 loads of laundry every week just to clean the towels.
My favorite part of the whole thing is all the space for the totes! I can finally organize my seasonal decor and other things that we don't use everyday but I don't want to get rid of just yet. It's so nice that there is a place for everything and when I tell my kids to put their stuff away, they won't just throw it out into the garage anymore, they know now to put them away in their locker. Beautifully done. I love any kind of tote or basket for storing clutter. And this is so organized and bright and I am so happy to see you kept safety in mind. Tip over accidents happen all the time especially when non builder folks (like me) put an Ikea cabinet up. Tip over is what we almost forget every time.

Have a question about this project?
I love this idea, but how did you attach the locker dividers on the front so they don't shift? I know you used "L" brackets at the back of each. I want this idea for my next garage! (My house is currently for sale.)
I’m thinking about doing something similar in our garage but worried about the cold months. Has that been any issue for you? Thanks!
