Bird Aviary from what?

by Ozzys Girl
Highboy dresser turned Canary Aviary.
Flight and aviary cages looked like to much metal for my cottage style.
Before
I started with this from s thrift store it was the perfect fit. I had a perfect spot with just the right size.
After tore apart
I tore all down except front brace and rebuilt top and back.

Used metal cloth 1/4 inch.

Used trim same as used for screen doors on inside to cover all edges of wire.
Side door
I made 3 doors this one for changing water and food. It's high for top access.
Lower side door
I made this door low to change things out on bottom.

There is also a lower door in front to access treats changed daily and bird fun!

Also a all drawer to change paper out. It's in front
Storage
I used a drawer for storage. I added wheels for pulling on and out. I put glass tiles in bottom for a finished look.
Added accents
I added trim accents to top to blend in some color from the drawer.

Next a custom cover.

Hey! We are getting ready to turn an armoire into an aviary for our parakeets and I was wondering what sort of paint and wire you used. I'm a little worried about anything toxic been in the cage since sometimes they chew. Thanks and I love your project!

I have a veneer armoire is that safe?

  • Vicki Vicki on May 01, 2018

I want one of these so bad and have seen some nice armoires but I have no woodworking skills. Is mahogany wood safe to use if it is solid?

Billie Sue thank you. I so needed something more cottage than metal industrial. And had a certain size space for it to fit in. This popped up perfect timing my brain went to work. You could use a TV cabinet and to get more height put a table under or a writing desk. I like this for they have so much more flight room. Thanks again it was fun figuring it out. Good luck with your project.

You did a fantastic job on this! We have five Parrots at our house. My husband found me a cage someone else has made and, ironically, he is bringing it home today. I'm going to need to paint the outside of it because it's not in the best shape but this is going to be my weekend project. I hope mine ends up looking half as beautiful as yours!
