1. Measure the Bag Interior

Start by measuring the inside of your reusable grocery bag, focusing on the bottom and side panels.

Take precise measurements to ensure your insert fits snugly and supports the bag properly.

2. Cut the Cardboard Pieces

Use a box cutter and a ruler to cut five pieces from cardboard based on your measurements.

Prepare one base piece, two short side pieces, and two long side pieces to match the dimensions of your bag.

3. Extend Pieces if Needed

If your cardboard box is not large enough for the long sides, join smaller sections together.

Tape the pieces securely using duct tape on both sides to reinforce them and create sturdy panels.

4. Assemble the Side Panels

Lay the four side pieces in a row, alternating between short and long pieces.

Tape them together along one side so they remain connected but flexible enough to fold into a rectangular shape.

5. Add Fabric for a Finished Look

Smooth out a piece of scrap canvas fabric by ironing it. Hot glue the fabric onto one side of the connected cardboard panels to give the insert a polished appearance.

6. Form the Structured Frame

Bring the ends of the taped cardboard panels together to form a rectangular frame. Secure the ends with hot glue so the structure holds its shape firmly.

7. Insert Into the Bag

Slide the finished cardboard sleeve into your reusable grocery bag. Adjust it so it sits flat against the bottom and aligns with the sides.

Looks like you glued the cardboard into your bags. How to you wash them to keep them clean?

Just cut a piece of cardboard to fit the bottom of the bag. It will help the bag stay upright while adding your groceries. The cardboard can pulled from the bottom and laid inside so the bag can be folded flat or removed to clean the bag. Toss & replace the cardboard as needed.

  • Another thought that could give you the same result: cut a piece of cardboard long enough to fit both the bottom of the bag and one of the larger sides. Fold the cardboard so it will fit nicely inside the bag, and use a binder clip on the top edge (where the handle is) to hold them together. Fill the bag, undo the clip and slip the cardboard back out. Just a thought, and I like your idea of using the cardboard to give the bags more structure.
