Materials:
- Ice cubes
- Spoon or coin (optional, for fluffing fibers)
- Clean towel (optional)
Heavy furniture like coffee tables, couches, and chairs can leave deep dents in carpet over time. When the furniture is moved, those indents can make the carpet look worn or permanently damaged. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix using something you already have at home—ice cubes.
Start by moving the furniture and exposing the carpet dents. You’ll clearly see where the weight compressed the carpet fibers. This method was passed down to me by a family member who laid carpet for a living, and it works especially well on standard pile carpeting.
Place ice cubes directly into each carpet indent. If the dent is large, you may need more ice cubes to fully cover the area. Allow the ice cubes to melt completely on their own. As the ice melts, the water slowly soaks into the carpet fibers.
Once the ice has fully melted, do not blot or rush the drying process. Let the area air dry naturally. As the carpet dries, the moisture helps the fibers relax and lift back up, restoring the carpet’s original texture.
After the carpet is dry, you can gently fluff the fibers with your fingers, the edge of a spoon, or a coin if needed. You’ll be amazed at how the dents disappear and the carpet looks smooth again.
This simple trick is a great way to refresh your carpet without special tools, cleaners, or professional services—and it’s perfect after rearranging furniture or redecorating a room.
