High-end File Cabinet Makeover Using Simple Picture Frames!
Why are file cabinets so plain and rather ugly? Especially after they've been used hard over the years ending up with dents and sticky drawers...
I decided to challenge myself to see if I could actually fall in love with a beat up old file cabinet that couldn't even close any longer...
Not only did it turn out so beautiful, I want to now stare at it all day long!
But I think the secret sauce is thanks to two simple picture frames... what an incredible difference they made!
Here's what I did:
Hometalk Recommends!
After an old letter size file cabinet that had seen better days landed in my hands, I got right to work.
I used a hammer to bang out any dents, then oiled all the drawer sliders with a product called Inox so now it closes perfectly with one finger!
Both handles were also removed and spray painted in white.
After a good cleaning with soap and water, I went over the cabinet with Fusion's TSP Alternative, then painted it in Fusion's Cast Iron using a velour roller.
I like painting one side at a time, by applying the paint quickly, then ending in full end-to-end rolls to leave a flawless finish.
I then painted on a Cross Pattern design to give it some extra punch!
The pattern was stenciled in Fusion's Raw Silk on both sides and across the back, but not across the front. I had different plans for that!
Two picture frames with the backs removed were painted in Cast Iron as well.
With the file cabinet on the floor with drawers facing up, the picture frames were positioned in the center of each drawer, then hot glued into place.
I used a metal drill bit to drill new handle holes inside the frames, then reinstalled the handles. Now they are centered!
Then after placing a large cutting board on top of the cabinet, this beauty is now ready to work as hard as it looks good!
Those picture frames are everything, giving the cabinet a molding effect without having to build a thing!
Plus the deep colour, pattern and wood top really make this piece shine up any office corner!
However, even if you don't need a file cabinet, you may want to pick one up after you see how I'm using mine...
Want to see what's inside? Visit my original blog post HERE to see how I'm using mine and learn why I'm GLAD I found a letter sized cabinet instead of a full-size!
It's such a fantastic companion for any home office, and honestly, even pretty enough to use as a side table if desired!
How would you style up a file cabinet to suit your home?
