How to make Vicks VapoRub spray

1. Melt the Vicks VapoRub

Start by melting 1 tablespoon of Vicks VapoRub. You can do this by placing the Vicks in a small bowl and then in a larger bowl filled with hot water.

Melting the Vicks allows it to mix more easily with the other ingredients, ensuring that the active bug-repelling ingredients are evenly dispersed throughout the spray.

2. Mix with Hot Water

Once the Vicks is melted, add 1 cup of hot water and stir until fully dissolved. The hot water helps break down the Vicks and ensures the menthol and camphor are well-distributed.

These ingredients are the key to repelling bugs, as their strong scent and properties act as a natural deterrent.

3. Add Witch Hazel or Rubbing Alcohol

Next, add 1 tablespoon of witch hazel or rubbing alcohol. Both of these ingredients act as solvents, helping the Vicks mix thoroughly with the water.

They also make the spray dry faster on the skin and surfaces, which means less greasiness.

The alcohol has the added benefit of being a mild insect repellent on its own, contributing to the spray’s effectiveness.

4. Enhance with Essential Oils (Optional)

To give your spray an extra bug-repelling boost and a pleasant aroma, add 10-15 drops of essential oils.

Citronella is a classic choice for keeping mosquitoes away, while lavender, tea tree, and peppermint are all effective and add a lovely scent.

These oils not only enhance the fragrance but also provide additional insect-repellent properties, making the spray more potent.

5. Incorporate a Carrier Oil (Optional)

If you want the spray to last longer on the skin, add 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil like coconut oil, jojoba oil, or almond oil.

Carrier oils help the active ingredients linger on your skin, extending the spray’s protective effects. They also nourish your skin, preventing dryness that can sometimes occur with alcohol-based sprays.

6. Cool and Transfer to a Spray Bottle

Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then transfer it into a spray bottle. Give it a good shake before each use to ensure all ingredients are well-mixed.

7. Apply and Reapply!

Spray the mixture onto exposed skin, clothing, and outdoor furniture. The menthol and camphor will keep the bugs at bay while the essential oils add a delightful scent.

Remember, because this is a natural spray, it’s best to reapply every couple of hours, especially if you’re sweating or after swimming.

Vick’s did make their product in a lotion form but I have not seen it in several years. I would use it as insect repellent. It was the best! Thank you for your recipe with Vick’s.

No worries? The pet owners reading here are in the need to be advised about the danger of an essential oil or burner, etc.
