Vintage Spice Jars
Even though this was a small project, the transformation was a big one!! I just love how these spice jars look like I scooped them up from an antique booth!

I've been setting these empty jars aside for a few months knowing I would do something with them. Wal-Mart has a large selection of spices with these jars.
The labels pull off easily too.
I removed the labels, washed the jars, and removed the sticky residue left over with a magic eraser.
I then took the jars outside and gave them two coats of spray paint. I decided to use this appliance spray because it's so durable.
I like the glossy look it gives the jars.
I sprayed the lids gold and decided I didn't like that look. Fail
I decided to make them look like galvanized steel instead.
I painted them a matte dark grey using chalk paint.
Once dry I stippled the lids with silver paint.
Much better!
Now that I've figured out this technique I may have to try this out on some other things.
So that's it! I may fill them with spices again and find some cute labels.
Then again I may just display them in my kitchen.

Consumer reports had a big report on lead in food and spices last year. They tested thyme and all the thyme tested had lead in it.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I’m wondering why you just did not tape around the Very top, screw on part of the glass bottles before spray painting them? it does seem that they way it was done would cause the paint to chip and wear every time the lid is screws on and off.
Isn’t it dangerous to our health to put spices in a spray painted container?
They are cute but, I would not want to use them for anything edible.
Great project for kids too! Even different size jars.
