Distressed Farmhouse Lantern
Grab a few things from the dollar store for this project and turn them into a gorgeous farmhouse lantern.
For this project, all my supplies came from Dollar Tree. I started out with two of these little decorative pieces that were left over from Valentine's Day. You can also find square décor if you want to use that. Make sure it had a deep inset on the opposite side.
I also picked up a set of measuring spoons and two sizes for dowel rods.
To get everything ready, I painted it all black. I had to put several coats on for everything to be covered well.
Once everything was dry it was time to start building the lantern.
I started by flipping one of the art pieces over to form the bottom of the lantern and used hot glue on the bottom and side of each dowel to attach them to the corners.
I did this for all four corners.
After the four dowels were successfully attached, it was time to add the top. I did the same as the bottom and added hot glue to each dowel and then slipped them inside the other little art piece.
To make this look even more like a lantern I created x’s on two of the sides. I figured out where I wanted the smaller dowel rods to go first.
Then, I glued them in place with the hot glue.
I wanted to add a little character to the top of the lantern so I grabbed some Tumbling Tower blocks and laid them out in small groups of five.
I glued them all together with hot glue and made sure to hold the blocks tight while the glue dried.
Once the glue was dry, I painted all of the blocks black as well as a small wooden bead I had.
To assemble the top, I added the larger block first and glued the smaller block and bead on top of that.
I grabbed the ring off of my measuring spoons, snipped off the ends, and painted it black to finish off the top of the lantern.
With a little hot glue, the ring stayed securely inside the bead.
Finally, to add a weathered or aged look to the lantern I used a little honeycomb-colored paint and lightly brushed it along the edges and sides.
Here is my chic distressed farmhouse lantern. I really love how it came together. I think it works perfectly in my kitchen. I hope you feel inspired to try this project and will grab what you need the next time you are at the dollar store.
