Sometimes I start a DIY thinking it’ll be a whole project, and halfway through, I’m already over it. But this one? This is the kind of DIY that makes you feel like a genius with basically zero effort.

If you love a big DIY as much as I do, but don’t always have the time (or patience), this DIY couch tray table is about to become your new favorite hack.

It took me less than five minutes, cost just a few dollars, and now I have the perfect little spot for snacks and drinks during movie night.

Tools & Materials:

  • Dollar Tree plastic tray
  • Small piece of craft wood (cut to fit inside tray base)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks

How to make a couch arm tray table with wood and a plastic tray

1. Glue the Wood to the Tray

This is where the magic happens—and honestly, it couldn’t be easier.

  • Apply a line of hot glue around the edges of your craft wood
  • Press the wood firmly onto the bottom of the tray
  • Hold for a few seconds until it sets

That’s it. No measuring marathons. No complicated steps. Just glue and go.

2. Let It Set (aka Take a Sip of Coffee)

Hot glue dries fast, but give it a minute to fully secure.

This is the perfect time to admire your work or grab a snack to celebrate your productivity.

3. Slide It Into Your Couch

Now for the fun part.

  • Take your tray over to your couch
  • Gently slide the wood base between the cushions
  • Adjust until it feels snug and stable

Why This Works (And Why It’s So Smart)

The piece of wood acts like an anchor between your couch cushions, keeping the tray stable so it doesn’t tip or slide.

It’s one of those “why didn’t I think of that sooner?” kind of hacks.

Plus:

  • It’s renter-friendly (no damage!)
  • Super budget-friendly
  • Easy to customize with paint or stain

Why do this: Apply a line of hot glue around the edges of your craft wood? Only one long edge will touch the tray.

I don’t understand you have a coffee table and you have end tables. Why would you risk spilling a beverage on your couch?

It is a nice idea, but unfortunately for me if I tried it my cat would just sit on it. And she is extremely large. I'd never get her off.
