DIY Over the Arm Sofa Table – Made With Just Two Hangers!

An upcycled hanger project that gives your couch a built-in side table
If your sofa has no nearby surface for a drink or remote, this DIY over the arm sofa table might be exactly what you need. It’s simple, clever, and only takes a few materials, including two wooden hangers!
This space-saving couch solution is especially useful in apartments or small living rooms where end tables just don’t fit. And if your sofa arms are looking a little worn (or clawed by curious cats), this table adds a stylish cover-up.

1. Remove the Hanger Hooks
Use a hacksaw to lightly score the metal hooks at their base. Then gently rock them back and forth until they pop off clean.
2. Align and Drill the Hangers
Place both hangers in a mirrored position and line them up. Use a countersink bit to drill pilot holes through each end. This helps your screws sit flush during assembly.
3. Cut and Sand Your Tabletop
Cut your ¾ inch thick wood piece to 11 inches in length.
Then use a sanding block to smooth and slightly round all edges.
Wipe away any dust with a cloth.
4. Seal the Tabletop
Use a foam brush to apply two coats of clear polycrylic sealer to the wood. Let it dry between coats. This protects the wood while keeping the natural look.
5. Assemble the Table
Attach the first hanger to one side of the sealed wood, pre-drilling holes and securing it with 1.5-inch screws.
Then repeat on the other side with the second hanger.
Over The Arm Sofa Table Tutorial
So there you have it, a functional, stylish, and surprisingly simple hanger table that can fit into just about any living room setup. Perfect for holding your coffee mug, phone, or remote without needing a full side table.
Have you made something like this before? Or do you have another clever way to add surface space without buying more furniture?

Have a question about this project?
What a great idea. How about adding another layer and make it so the cup won't fall over so easily? I will have to try something like that.
Very clever! Looks like it snugly holds onto the arm rest. 👍❤️
Can you remove the dowls or are they needed for it to stay in place?
