Tools and materials:
Look what I found at Dollar Tree. I found their wonderful pizza pans and I'm going to grab a couple of these.
1. Paint the pizza pan
To make my summer wreath I started by painting one of my pans with Rustoleum gloss in Berry Pink spray paint. I gave it a nice coat of this paint, let it dry completely, and then gave it another coat.
2. Dye the clothespins green
Next, I added six cups of hot water to an old container.
I also added six teaspoons of Truly Green RIT liquid dye.
I used that mixture on 50 of my clothes pins and pushed them down into the water I placed a Ziploc bag full of water on top to make sure that they stayed down in the water and didn't float.
In another container, I added six cups of hot water and just three teaspoons of the RIT dye for some lighter green on my other 50 clothes pins.
Here you can see the difference in the dark green and the light green clothes pins before they dried.
3. Make the loop at the back to hang
Before I started on the front of the wreath, I tied a really good knot in a ribbon that I was going to be using on the front.
To attach the ribbon to the back of the pan, instead of hot glue, because there's going to be some weight involved, I used Ultimate multi-surface adhesive. It takes a little bit longer to dry, but I am more confident that this will hold the weight after I put the clothespins on.
4. Draw the watermelon seeds
Now that the pizza pan is all painted and beautiful it’s time to add some watermelon seeds.
I used a water-based acrylic paint pen because it dries really quickly to draw seeds all over the pan.
5. Attach the clothespins
To add the green clothespins, I clipped them onto the pizza pan alternating a light one with a dark one. This will simulate the variation in color on the outside of a watermelon.
6. Add flowers
I left a space at the bottom of the pan so that I could finish it off with some flowers and a bow.
I picked out what I think are some pretty watermelon-ish colors of silk flowers.
I cut the stems really close to the bottoms with some snips.
The dark flower looked good in the middle with the lighter ones on either side.
To attach them to the pan, I used a generous amount of hot glue all around the stem. If you are going to be putting this on a door in the sun, you would want to use the Ultimate or a gorilla glue adhesive.
I know if I put something with hot glue on it on a door that's in the sun, I have a problem with it heating up and letting go so keep that in mind if you get a lot of heat on your door like I do here in Florida.
7. Finish with a bow
I finished off the wreath with a bow made from the same ribbon I used on the back. You can make your bow as large or as small as you would like.
To secure the bow I used a pipe cleaner through the middle and twisted it at the back. Don’t forget to fluff it out.
Then, I used hot glue to attach the bow to the pan right under the flowers.
