Repurposed Wooden Spool to Towel and Table Rack
We are moving right along in the back yard working on our spa area, just finished the pony wall but needed something to hang our beach towels and personal item to put on. We have chairs but many times they are wet from afternoon showers. So I went to my garage and started looking around for some supplies. I had a small wooden spool that holds wire and a short leftover 4 x4 so i came up with and idea.
This small spool I picked up on the side of the road. I had to sand down areas to remove writing.
I added L brackets on all four sides to support short 4x4.
I had purchased unicorn spit at habitat and wanted to try it out. I had never used before but you could just stain one color or paint.
These were glitter red, white and blue colors. I was thinking patriotic colors.
I had lightly sanded the center to remove writing which made it take the stain better.
It was a warm day and this was very time consuming. I had to go back over many times and dry brush more colors to brighten it. I used a spray bottle with water to blend colors. I did the underside as well. To have it finished.
Not sure if it was different wood or smoother but the 4x4 post took the color more and blended much better.
I had purchased solar lights at dollar store and my husband drilled a hole in the top for the solar light. I love when he gets involved in my projects.
I attached two black hooks on each of the four sides for towels or purses etc.
once I got all hardware on my rack I went over with Thompson water seal. As you can see the sun is already bleaching it out even with sealant. obviously, Unicorn spit is not uv protected so only for interior use.
Here is my finished towel rack. Most of my materials I found around the house. As I have said many times I hoard supplies. The hardest part was the unicorn spit. I had never used it and wanted to try. You could just stain it or paint it and save yourself some time. In the picture the post looks slanted but it is just concrete. Hope you enjoy my quick colorful repurposed wooden wire spool.

very clever and a great way to not have towels all over your fence and deck.
