Creating a backyard makeover that the entire family can enjoy, including our dog Enzo, was a project close to my heart.

As a DIY enthusiast, I knew that saving time and money was crucial, and I found a way to do just that while ensuring Enzo could roam freely and safely.

Here's how I transformed our backyard into a haven for both relaxation and play, with some innovative solutions along the way.

1. Choose the SpotOn fence for your dog

Traditional fencing can be expensive and time-consuming to install, not to mention it can obstruct your view of the landscape.

That's why I opted for a virtual fence powered by advanced GPS technology to give Enzo the freedom to roam without the need for physical barriers.

The SpotOn Fence system was the perfect solution. It uses GPS technology to create a virtual boundary, which is ideal for larger yards where you don't want to obstruct the landscape.

Here's what makes it stand out:

  • No cellular subscription required: You can start using the GPS fencing right out of the box. If you prefer advanced tracking features, an optional cellular subscription is available.
  • Ease of use: Setting up the virtual fence was as simple as walking the boundaries and following the training steps provided. In no time, Enzo was ready to roam off-leash within his new boundaries.
  • Unlimited fences: Whether at home or on the go, you can create an unlimited number of fences with the SpotOn Fence system, giving you flexibility wherever you are.

With the virtual fence set up, I had peace of mind knowing Enzo was safe and happy while I focused on the deck makeover.

2. Prepare your deck for painting

The first step in the deck makeover was to paint the base layer. Here's how I did it:

  1. Prep the deck: Before painting, ensure your deck is clean and free of debris. This will help the paint adhere better and give you a smooth finish.
  2. Paint close to the house: Using a brush, I painted the areas close to the house where a roller wouldn't reach.
  3. Roll on the base color: I chose an outdoor-grade paint in a soft gray to act as the perfect background for my design. After applying the paint with a roller, I let it dry completely.

3. Add a decorative pattern

With the base layer dry, it was time to add some visual interest to the deck. I decided to freehand a diamond pattern within a marked rectangle, but there are plenty of options depending on your comfort level:

  1. Mark the design area: Using a pencil, I marked a large rectangle on the deck where the design would go.
  2. Tape off the area: For clean lines, tape off the edges of the rectangle where necessary.
  3. Paint the design: I used a creamy white paint to fill in the rectangle. Once that was dry, I free-handed a diamond pattern within the space. If free-handing isn't your thing, you can always use a stencil or tape off basic stripes for a simpler design.

4. Let your dog enjoy the space

While the paint dried, we wanted to let Enzo out to enjoy the yard. Thanks to the SpotOn virtual fence, we could do just that without worrying about him running away.

One of the best features of SpotOn is that it allows you to create keep-out zones within your fence, perfect for keeping your dog away from wet paint, construction areas, or delicate garden beds.

5. Finish off the deck

With the decorative painting complete, it was time to finish the deck:

  1. Remove the tape: Once all the paint was dry, I carefully removed the tape to reveal crisp, clean lines.
  2. Bring in new furniture and decor: To complete the transformation, I added some new outdoor furniture and decor that complemented the new deck design.

6. Enjoy your new backyard

I'm thrilled with how the deck turned out, and even happier that the whole family, including Enzo, can now enjoy our backyard oasis.

With the SpotOn GPS dog fence, Enzo now has the freedom to explore safely, and I have the peace of mind knowing he's within his boundaries.

The SpotOn app also adds convenience by allowing me to track Enzo's location, adjust his collar settings, and even create new fences or keep-out zones — all without leaving the deck.

It's a user-friendly solution that enhances our outdoor experience.

That is a good idea but what I would be afraid of is a loose dog or someone coming into the yard if your dog is friendly and you are doing something else.
