Simple Gabion Retaining Wall #1

My fiancé could not take the eyesore of the collapsed retaining wall in our back yard. I had a lot of half bricks left over from building the garage and some wire mesh trays that were damaged. This is what she built with a bit of help

The tools and materials we used: Wire Mesh trays, Bolt cutter, Pliers, Wire and left-over bricks. We set out a level and cut the mesh to accommodate the uneven terrain

After the trays/ basket was built, she started packing the double row of bricks. This part is not kind to skin, so use gloves if you can

Every half meter or so, we put in "wire stays" to make sure the wall stays parallel and tight on the bricks

After the first basket was packed, we assembled another set of trays and then started packing the next basket. The total height of this is 600mm and it was quite steady. I do however think that the wall will have to be wider that two rows if you want to go higher

This is the wall completed. Our next step will be to make a "deadman retaining wall anchor" and to fill it up. I will post that separately

Are you going to leave that concertina razor-wire along the top? It looks like you live next to a detention center. If you're looking for a cheap fix, a tall privacy fence would cover up the whole mess.

I agree. You did have an eyesore. Now you have a functional wall waiting to be dressed with plants. I built a wood wall to hide ugly and behind it placed huge pots to just reach the edge of top of wall (placed whatever it took under pots to reach height I wanted. Spring, summer filled with flowers. Beautiful. Fall decorated with mums, scarecrows and fall things with yellow spotlight. So cozy. Now it’s Christmas and mine are filled with ornament topiaries (one has three white sparkly ornaments in descending sizes with the coolest top hat ever; next Valentines, shamrocks, Easter eggs flowers and flags. So you can do loads with that wall as you see fit. My other wall is Windsor blocks. Chose as idiot proof installation and guess which idiot built😊
