How to Create a Pretty Mosaic Using Broken Mirror and Old Crockery

I wanted to make something unique and sparkly using up some pretty pieces of old broken crockery and little bits of mirror tiles. I also wanted to try out a new cement backer board as a way of doing a robust piece that will be ok for garden display.
I cut with wheeled tile nippers an old broken plate which has a nice floral centre pattern. Make sure to wear safety goggles.
I nibble the china edges slowly around to make a shape that will fit my design.
Then time to glue into centre of board with PVA
Next I create a mosaic mixed turquoise blue little tiles border.
I want to use the little pieces of vintage china florals to form a pattern so begin playing around with various options for the design.
Glued down it’s time to fill in with broken mirror tiles.
Building up the triangles of mirror glass tile in the gaps makes the design come to life and sparkle.
Next decision is what colour to grout this piece ? The grout has such an influence on the final look …. Decisions
i decide on a pale green and add a little acrylic paint to the white grout powder suitable for outdoor use.
Then mix to a Paste and work into the crevices of tiles until all covered. Best to wear protective gloves as it’s messy. Then after few minutes it’s time to wipe off the excess grout to reveal the final piece and a hey presto!!
