How to Turn a Planter Into a Stylish Storage Solution

Danielle
by Danielle

I had one of those plain, forgettable planters sitting on my patio, and I knew it could be so much more.

With a little painter’s tape and paint, I gave it a modern striped makeover and turned it into a stylish storage solution.

The best part? This simple DIY planter project doesn’t just look good, it actually helps keep your outdoor space neat and functional too.

Easy painted planter stripes using painter’s tape tutorial

1. Create a Stripe Pattern with Tape

Start by bringing your planter inside and giving it a quick wipe so the paint sticks properly. Then grab your painter’s tape and start creating a stripe pattern all the way around the pot.

You can go evenly spaced for a clean, modern look, or mix widths for something a little more playful. I kept mine simple with evenly spaced stripes for that crisp, contemporary feel.

2. Paint the Exposed Sections

Once your tape is in place, use your black craft paint to fill in the exposed areas between the tape. Apply thin, even coats to avoid drips and get that smooth finish.

Don’t worry if it looks a little uneven at first. A second coat usually does the trick.

3. Finish the Rim for a Polished Look

Here’s a little trick that makes a big difference. Before removing all the tape, flip the planter over and peel back just enough tape near the rim so you can paint that edge cleanly.

It gives the whole piece a finished, intentional look instead of stopping the design abruptly.

4. The Most Satisfying Step: Peel the Tape

Now for the best part of any DIY… the tape pull.

Carefully peel off the painter’s tape to reveal those crisp, clean lines. It’s honestly the moment that makes all the effort worth it.

5. Turn the Saucer Into a Handy Lid

Don’t forget about the saucer. This is where the project becomes extra functional.

Grab an old drawer handle and attach it to the center of the saucer using contact cement. Let it dry completely so it’s secure.

Now you’ve got a lid that’s easy to lift and adds a cute, custom detail.

6. Use It as Outdoor Storage

Once everything is dry, take your new creation outside and put it to work.

I started by using mine to tuck away those not-so-pretty gardening tools. You know, the ones that somehow always end up scattered around the patio.

7. Or Turn It Into a Drink Cooler

And then… I had a better idea.

Fill it with ice, toss in some cold drinks, and suddenly you’ve got the cutest little patio cooler. It’s perfect for hot days, casual hangouts, or just treating yourself after a long afternoon outside.

Always good to find additional uses for items than what they were originally intended for. If you have the little feet to put under planters, this will raise it off the ground when ice is melting out the bottom to protect the paint. Thank you for sharing!
