Dollar Tree DIY Washboard Laundry Room Sign

This Dollar Tree DIY is one of my favorites and took very little time and money to create. Next time you see a decor item you love, try to recreate it yourself!

You Will Need:

• Dollar Tree Mini Jenga Game
• Dollar Tree Galvanized Metal Picture Frame
• Wood Glue
• Craft Paint
• Sponge Brush
• Photo Paper
• Tape

Step 1: Shop for and Gather Supplies

I went to Dollar Tree to find a mini jenga game and a wooden frame with galvanized metal inside to use for the mini washboard laundry sign. The frame I found was the perfect size for my sign.

Step 2: Remove Embellishment and Frame Back

The metal insert inside my frame came with a clip attached to it so I removed it. Use a small screwdriver and remove any clips or other embellishments that may be on the metal insert in your frame. I also removed the hardware on the back of the frame backing because I wanted it to be flat. Use a screwdriver if necessary, to get them off.

Step 3: Glue Jenga Blocks for Legs

I used wood glue to attach two jenga blocks on each side of the frame to create feet for the sign. Turn the frame over and glue one block to the frame and then glue a second piece to the bottom of the first piece. 

Step 4: Create Sign Holder on Top

I glued more jenga blocks together at the top of the frame to create the opening for my print out laundry sign. I glued two blocks going vertically and three going horizontally to make a rectangle shape with the jenga pieces and then filled in any gaps caused by the pieces not lining up correctly with hot glue because I knew the paint would cover the seams. You can use a saw to cut the jenga pieces to fit perfectly, overlap them, or fill in the gaps and paint them.

Step 5: Remove Frame Insert

After the glue was completely dry, I removed the metal insert and the frame backing to protect them from getting paint on them. 

Step 6: Paint Base Coat

I used a sponge tip brush to completely cover the frame with dark gray craft paint and let it dry slightly. Make sure to thoroughly coat the entire frame.

Step 7: Paint on a Distressed Finish

Once the dark base coat dried slightly, I used a second, lighter shade of paint to create a lightly distressed look on the frame. I used a stiff tip paintbrush and lightly dabbed bits of the second shade of paint to areas around the frame and then connected them. Use your paintbrush to deposit bits of the lighter shade of paint around the frame and then drag the brush along the frame to blend the dots. Let the frame dry completely.

Step 9: Create the Laundry Sign

I used the picmonkey photo program to make a laundry sign and printed it on photo paper. Use any photo editing or word processing program to design a sign and then print it out on photo paper set to print a 5x7. If you would rather, you can also find one online, download it, and then print it out on the photo paper. You could also use regular paper and seal it with mod podge or another protectant to keep it from splashed or spills in the laundry room. I used tape to attach the photo to the reverse side of the area at the top of the frame.

This laundry sign was so easy to make and looks simply adorable in my laundry room. It is so inexpensive to create using only a few supplies from Dollar Tree and can be painted or stained however you choose, depending on your style and your other home decor.
