How to Make an Elf on the Shelf Hammock for Some Silly Christmas Fun!
Have you ever walked into your kitchen and caught your mischievous elf on the shelf just lounging around? Well, I did—sort of!
This year, our elf has been up to some hilarious antics, and today I’ll show you how I made an elf on the shelf hammock for him to kick back and relax.
Trust me, this diy elf on the shelf idea is as simple as it is funny, and it’s guaranteed to bring lots of giggles to your home!
Tools and Materials
- 2 Command hooks
- A disposable face mask
- Your Elf on the Shelf
- Optional accessories: doll sunglasses, a tiny blanket, or a mini book

1. Setting the Scene
Choose a spot under your kitchen wall cabinets (or anywhere with a bit of space for your elf to “hang out”). Attach the first Command hook under the cabinet.
2. Preparing the Hammock
Take your face mask and open it up.
Hook one of the ear loops onto the first Command hook.
I added a blob of putty to the end of the hook to keep the mask from slipping off.
You could also hang the hooks between 2 walls if the mask keeps slipping off, but the putty worked perfectly for my set-up.
3. Positioning the Second Hook
Stretch the mask gently to gauge where the second Command hook should go. Attach it in place and hook on the other ear loop.

4. Making Your Elf Look Relaxed
Now for the fun part—add your elf!
Place him in the hammock and accessorize with a doll-sized blanket, sunglasses, and even a little book. The more “chill” he looks, the better!

Oh the elf on the shelf. Every parents toy you you love to hate. It’s fun for kids and you love to see kids have fun finding in morning. You hate it because at least once in December you awake in a start at 4AM “I forgot to move the elf!” Followed by stumbling groggy out of bed, wake the dog who thinks it’s time to for breakfast, to find the elf that the dog chewed last December to put in new place discover you can’t find it panicked throw coat over pj’s off to Target that opens 5 am for Christmas shoppers, to run like mad woman through store (along with at least two more moms) to find stock person unpacking new shipment to grab one off to self pay back home ripping packaging off like a mad dog tossing on top of something to hear footsteps on stairs and kids immediately go to with childlike wonder to bring you the original elf upon which you hear squeals of Joy as second one found. So debate name? Well dog ear is Pete, new is RePete and (oh yes not once but twice) final one Double Take. True story. Daughter cherishes fun kids have had through the years and feels so blessed she doesn’t move every night in December. They now sit on mantle to celebrate glories of Christmas past
