Quick & Effective Toilet Cleaning: The Dishwasher Tablet Trick
You know those days when you’re knee-deep in chores and just want an easier way to get things done?
That was me last weekend. I was tackling the usual Saturday morning clean-up when I noticed my toilet wasn’t as fresh as I’d like. Then, I remembered reading somewhere about using dishwasher tablets for tough grime.
That’s when I thought—why not try it on the toilet? Spoiler alert: It worked wonders!

1. Prep Your Toilet 🚽
First things first—make sure your toilet bowl is ready for cleaning.
Flush the toilet to start with a clean slate. This will ensure that the tablet can get right to work without any excess water diluting its power.
2. Drop the Tablet In 💧
Now for the fun part—drop that dishwasher tablet right into the toilet bowl.
You’ll notice it starts to fizz and dissolve pretty quickly, which is exactly what we want! The fizzing action helps lift stains and breaks down any buildup around the bowl.
3. Let It Sit 🕒
Patience is key here! Let the dishwasher tablet sit in the bowl for about 15-20 minutes.
This gives it time to work its magic on all those hard-to-reach spots. If your toilet is particularly dirty, you can leave it for a bit longer—up to 30 minutes.
4. Scrub Away 🧼
After the tablet has had some time to do its thing, grab your toilet brush and give the bowl a good scrub.
Pay special attention to any areas with visible stains or buildup. You’ll be amazed at how easily the grime lifts away!
5. Flush and Polish ✨
Once you’ve scrubbed to your heart’s content, flush the toilet to rinse away the residue.
For an extra touch of shine, use your microfiber cloth to wipe down the seat and exterior. Your toilet should now be sparkling clean and smelling fresh!

I've been on a septic system for near 30 years. We had 5 kids who grew up and moved on. We've used a dishwasher from day one. Running many times 2 loads a day. Regular professional tank maintenance every couple of years.Never had a problem. Now the big "killer" of septic systems is grease. I use old napkins or newspaper to wipe grease off of anything that goes into the dishwasher. Even butter off of knives. Keep the grease out of your system. It goes a long way in extending the life of your field

TOTAL waste of money. I purchase a tiny set of pump bottles about 3 1/2' tall from American Science and Surplus. GREAT catalog. The descriptions in the catalog are worth the price of admission. You can order online and they will include a catalog with order. I keep one pumper in each bathroom filled with dish soap. One squirt of dish soap and a swish with a toilet brush is all you need. Why put so many expensive chemicals in the waterl

I have used muriatic acid on a toilet at work and for a number of friends.
Be CAREFUL! But this really works, and you hardly have to scrub!

Have a question about this project?
Oh my, Not meaning to stir a pot, but Are people really that clueless as to what and where liquids go once they are realeased into a household drain? I have used Coke a cola, denture cleanser, tooth paste tubes in the toilet tank, cleaners made for toilets. You have to scrub that toilet often to keep it sparkling and smelling fresh no matter what you use to clean it with. I my neck of the woods there are still the old time Out Houses in use in certain areas.😉
I've always used Comet to clean toilets. My question tho... We are in a rental apartment and the rim on the toilet has a brown, coke color, all around it. How can I remove it?
What can you use to clean the tank not the bowl
