How to Make a Rustic DIY Farmhouse Bookshelf Inspired By Ana White
We are a husband and wife team who build our furniture for ourselves. This DIY farmhouse bookshelf was one of the first pieces we ever built.
It was inspired by the Rustic X Bookshelf by Ana White; her plans are super easy to follow and available on her website!
1. Make the outer frame & shelves
We started with the outer frame using 2x4s. Then we added in the shelves using plywood and 2x2s as an outer frame.
2. Build the face frames & attach the shelves
Build the two face frames for the front and back. Then drill 3/4" pocket holes around all sides of the shelves and attach shelves to the face frames.
3. Make the Xs
Ana White's instructions for the Xs are awesome! You just take a 2x2 and hold it over where it will go. Mark the angle cuts and then cut with a jigsaw.
They can be attached from top and bottom with 2 1/2" wood screws predrilled. Also, attach to the middle shelves with screws or nails.
4. Add wood filler & sand
Fill all the holes with wood filler and let it dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed, and then sand the whole thing down.
5. Stain
Once it was all put together we stained the whole piece a walnut color to help complement our flooring!
