DIY Budget Friendly Barn Door Closet - Plywood
I wanted to switch up some closet Doors at home, we still have builders style and I needed something more customized.
and yep! I used plywood 😁
The beginning
I cut the plywood to size and used 1x4’s to frame the sides, top and bottom.
Half way there...
This is the 50% there progress photo.
But as you already know, plywood is porous, has splits, holes, cavities, it’s not smooth or easy to finish. So I knew I had a long road in front of me to make this look like a door..
The pro? It’s cheap!
(as a matter of fact I always make sure my projects are budget friendly Dave Ramsey would approve) I post all of the details on IG:

I used wall spackle
Uh huh, the type that goes on pink and dries white, as you can tell by the amount of white on it, it was a lot of work to smooth it out like a baby’s face.
I spackled and sanded a few times with a few coats of primer in between so I could see the imperfections.
This was a tedious but necessary step to make the doors smoothy.
- I actually enjoy spackling so I don’t mind the work at all.
Ready to be Painted
I used Behr Paint in a blue-ish gray-ish color. Make sure you prime well, this is an important step.
These will be used to hang as bard doors for my Master Bedroom closet, but I’ll definitely build more to match the remaining closet doors throughout the house and maybe even change them up a bit
All finished!
you too can build a door with cheap plywood..
I purchased the hardware at Walmart and was honestly a bit scared that it would be a mess, as some of these products are produced to be sold unbranded in bulk often times we aren’t lucky with the quality. It was very cheap.
But WHOA!!! impeccable instructions, very smooth sliding and awesome qualify finish.
Would not only buy again but recommend 10/10..

That's incredible!!!! If I could fit a piece of plywood in my car I'd absolutely try doing this, the way you have outlined. Love it!!
