How to Easily DIY the Zodiac Mirror by Moustache For Just $50
I received a request to make the Zodiac mirror by designer Jean-Baptiste Fastrez at the brand Moustache. This mirror is oval in shape and has a thick, modern frame. The original design costs $1,800, so I decided to create my own DIY mirror frame idea for a fraction of that cost.
The Zodiac mirror is so cool and we can remake it so easily. Let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Oval-shaped mirror
- Aluminum foil
- Joint compound
- Water
- Marker
- Gloves
1. Cover the mirror with aluminum foil
Cover the edge of the mirror with aluminum foil. The reason we’re using aluminum foil is that joint compound can be very heavy. If we created the shape only using joint compound, the mirror would weigh too much and likely fall down and break.
So, we’re creating the shape with aluminum foil and then we’ll cover it with joint compound.
When you get to the place where you plan to put your screws, make a mark.
Leave a slight gap between the rolls of aluminum where the mark is.
This is what your mirror frame should look like so far.
2. Cover the aluminum foil with joint compound
We’re going to be covering our mirror frame with joint compound, which is way cheaper than ceramic. First, mix the joint compound with water.
Then cover the aluminum foil with a layer of the joint compound. Make sure you use gloves for this step!
Go over the surface with water to make it as smooth as possible.
Then, simply wait for it to dry!
DIY Zodiac mirror
That’s it! Here’s the finished DIY mirror frame, inspired by the Zodiac mirror by Jean-Baptiste Fastrez at Moustache. This was quick, simple, and cheap to make and the result is really effective. The materials only cost me $50 in total, so I saved $1,750!

You might be able to do this same idea with pool noodles glued to the mirror as your base. 🤷🏻♀️
