DIY Christmas Cabinet Knob Covers: Festive Decor for the Holidays
When it comes to decking the halls, why stop at the living room? This year, I’m hosting Christmas, and with family visiting for three days straight, I wanted every inch of my home to feel like a Christmas dream.
From cozy guest rooms to festive table settings, I had most of my decorating planned. But then I realized: why not add some holiday flair to my kitchen? That’s when the idea for Christmas cabinet knob covers was born.
This simple DIY is budget-friendly, easy to make, and the perfect way to sprinkle some Christmas magic where you least expect it.
Let me show you how I turned everyday items into festive decor that had my kitchen handles looking like candy canes in no time!
Tools and Materials
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own Christmas cabinet knob covers:
- Paper straws

1. Choose Your Style
In my kitchen, there’s a cozy red hot drinks station that guests naturally gravitate towards. Since this spot gets so much attention during the holidays, I knew it was the perfect place to add a festive touch.
Nothing says Christmas like the classic combination of red, white, and gold. I decided to incorporate all three colors into the space by creating two distinct looks:
- Gold-and-white candy stripes for the bottom cabinets, add a touch of elegance.
- Red-and-white candy cane stripes for the top cabinets, bring in a more traditional Christmas vibe.
These color choices tied the whole area together, making it both festive and inviting for my guests.
2. Cover the Bottom Cabinets with Paper Straws
This was the easiest part.
I measured the paper straws against the cabinet handle and cut the straws to the correct length.
Next, I sliced the straw lengthwise, opened it slightly, and slid it over the cabinet handle.
Add a tiny drop of hot glue at the top and bottom to keep it secure.
3. Create Red-and-White Candy Cane Handles for the Top Cabinets
To achieve the classic candy cane effect, I used red balloon sticks and white plastic straws I already had on hand.
If you don’t have these lying around, don’t worry—it’s much easier to grab some pre-made red-and-white striped paper straws and follow the same method I used for the gold-and-white handles.
Since I had these materials in my stash for years, I decided to upcycle them into something festive. Here’s how I created this fun, holiday-inspired look:
Preparing the Red Base
The first step is creating a red base to cover my silver cabinet handles:
Measure the red balloon stick against the cabinet handle and cut it to size.
Slice the stick lengthwise and gently open it up. The plastic is a bit stiff, so sliding it onto the handle from the bottom works best for a snug fit.
Secure the red covering in place with a small dab of hot glue at each end.
Adding the White Stripe
Use a pencil sharpener to create a pointed tip on one end of a white straw. Hold the straw at a 45-degree angle to sharpen.
Once the tip is shaped, pull the straw through the sharpener to turn it into a ribbon-like strip.
Wrap the white ribbon around the red base, adjusting it to get the perfect candy cane look.
Trim any excess from the top and bottom of the handle and secure the stripe with a tiny dot of hot glue.
And there you have it—a simple yet striking way to add holiday cheer to your cabinets!

I’d rather not put hot glue on my cabinet handles. Wouldn’t it be easiest to use red and white pipe cleaners and wrap them around the handles? You could even continue to twist the pipe cleaners above the handle and bend so it looks like a candy cane.
