I need to block access from the main floor to the second floor in the verses of an Alzheimer’s patient. It will be a temporary barrier of indeterminant time. I would of course prefer that looks fairly nice.

Depending on the size and shape of the opening, why don't you install a door? If you are needing airflow, you could install a screen door. Obviously you would have to have the framing done for the door, but it would not ruin the look of the house and stair way and could be done at the top or the bottom of the stairs.

How about 2 baby gates, one on top of the other, and in front of it a curtain that matches the decor on a tension rod. If you can, put a dark small rug in front of that area, as ling as it is not a trip hazard. Often Alzheimers patients will avoid it. Check with your local aging rescources if you have them available.

Not sure what “versus” means but I am picturing a staircase that needs to be blocked so the person cannot use the stairs. Try some free-standing folding panels/decorative screens to distract them ... You could even put a small table, buffet/dresser/chest, bench or fake plant in front of the folding screen/s ... or maybe hang some sliding doors like the barn-style ones.

Dealing with Alzheimers is heartbreaking. Prayers to you all 🙏🏼

You can also use one of those locking dog gates. They come in a large variety of heights and widths. They are easy to unlock, but you have to use both hands. Ours are from a company called Carlson. You can get them just about anywhere but Google them first so you can find the model that is best for your situation
