Last year I was so disappointed - we had limited blooms on our apple tree because of a late winter storm. My tree produced a small amount of apples and of course every critter in the world was going to have them except me. The worst were the squirrels because they would climb it, eat a few bites, and then throw the rest on the ground for the rabbits to eat. I also had voles in my garden which ate my strawberries & tomatoes. I had to figure something out and this is what I'm trying this year. I put them up early this spring & so far - no critters plus they look pretty spinning in the sun outside.
You will need: Used CD's Fish line Bells Large plant s hooks for trees Yard stakes for your garden
For my garden: I have 3 garden beds and I added 1 stake to each end of the middle bead (where my strawberries are and tomatoes go). I tied a loop of fishline to the cd and hung it on the stake. I made a second loop of line and added a bell.
For my apple tree: I tied 3 used cds together with fish line. I added a loop at the top and hooked it on a plant hanging s hook. On the bottom I added a bell.
The breeze (and it doesn't have to have much of one) makes the cd's spin and when the light hits them it makes a mirror effect. They look pretty spinning around. The bell also rings in the wind and should when something puts weight on a branch causing it to shake.
We are a month in with the garden in and my apple tree had great blooms this year and is full of leaves. There are 3 squirrels in my yard but so far so good - I haven't seen them in my apple tree yet. I don't have any voles in my garden as well. Fingers crossed that this really keeps them away - and they are fun to watch and listen to at the same time.

Love the cd idea, but I am wondering if the birds stay away too! We feed our birds and try to keep the squirrels and chipmunks out because they are eating all the bird seed.

It might keep the birds out of that tree as well. I recommend putting a separate feeder down low for the squirrels and such, then they'll leave the bird feeders alone.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
How do you attach the CD's to the fishing line so they will spin?
We have lots of fruit trees and the deer eat the fruit that they can reach. Do you think a CD spinner in each tree is enough to scare them away? Should I do more for so I have a great season??
We have tried all kinds of products but have not had much luck with getting rid of moles. Do you know a sure way to get rid of these botherful moles?
thanks
Did you know moth ball can be toxic ?
