How to Make a DIY Log Fairy House That Looks Like Magic
Have you ever seen a piece of a fallen tree and thought, "Hmmm... DIY log fairy house?! Maybe it's just me but I love the fun and magic of fairies!
Our Fairy Forest is growing and as it evolves we've actually tried our hand at making their homes rather than just buying them. Here is how to make a fairy house out of a log:
1. Check for living creatures first
This fairy home was a hollowed-out piece of log. You'll want to be sure there are no more critters living in it before you start lol.
2. Make the bottom
You'll want a bottom to it, so stand your log on a piece of paper and trace it from inside. Then use your pattern to cut and install a piece of plywood for your downstairs floor.
3. Create openings
Using a few tools such as a spade drill and jigsaw create openings for your windows and door. If you don't have those tools, there are others you could use, such as a chisel and mallet.
Use what you have, as I always say!
4. Make the door & windows
Our door was actually a yard sale picture frame with hinged pieces that shut to look like a door! I'd never found the right spot for it but luckily still had it. But they do sell dollhouse doors on Amazon or at Hobby Lobby too.
Oh, and we put in a piece of plexiglass so that little fingers couldn't move things around when peering in. You may or may not want to do that, but we have lots and lots of visitors to see the houses.
The upper window here is a dollhouse window.
We ended up painting our windows and door in a blue color before gluing them in place.
5. Make the "upper floor"
Here you see the wood floor created to fit the inside space as the upper floor. You can use any bits of scrap wood and cut it to fit the unique size inside.
We made this one so it was not permanently attached inside so we could better change the furnishings inside if we wanted to.
6. Cut carpet squares
Using store sample carpet squares I cut a piece for the downstairs and the upstairs levels.
7. Make the roof
A roof can be simple or elaborate. I also say use what you have on hand to keep it cheap and easy. We made ours with wood scraps and roof shingles.
Tip: Notice we inserted wood pegs and peg holes so the roof could be lifted off.
8. Glue dollhouse furniture in place
Using a glue gun all the little pieces were glued into place. Here, our fairy is sitting at the table waiting for a friend to arrive to play Candyland with her.
Dollhouse furniture works so well! Look in your attic or check yard sales or find the special pieces you want on Amazon or at Hobby Lobby!
Peeking in through the window we can see the bathroom. There is a tub with a towel draped over it, a toilet, and a sink with soap. Everything was glued in place.
The walls are rough but that's what happens when you choose to live in a log fairy house!
9. Add lights
Lights in fairy houses make this even better so if you have some lights add them! The fewer lights the better and you can staple them in place. I pulled these out of the Christmas storage and then found a smaller strand that worked even better.

The first house in this row is the one we've shown how to make here but as you can see there are so many ways to create a fairy house. We are really enjoying seeing our Fairy Forest grow!
We were able to make our fairy house using the scrap materials we had on hand so there was no cost at all. I think this is a project most people can do very cheaply if not free.
