Sunken living rooms: should they stay away or make a comeback?
Let's take a trip down memory lane and talk about the sunken living room!
This design trend was a hallmark of the 60's and 70's, adding a unique architectural element to many homes. While some people love the cozy, intimate feel of a sunken living room, others find it outdated and impractical.
We want to hear your thoughts! Do you think the sunken living room should make a comeback, or is it best left in the past?

Leave in the past as they are a hazard for young and old a like!
Hi Amy: I have one, just a step down, and I love it. It gives the house a different look than just a one level house. I've never had a problem with the different levels, nor have my friends, one must be cognizant of their surroundings :) I have been known to trip over my shadow :)
Works in some specific style homes but doesn't fit others. Great for large living rooms for a retro look. I can't see them in a small space. Not easy to retrofit into existing living rooms. I think it's a personal choice and taste.
I think they look kinda cool when done right. But I’d never have one in my home - it’s a tripping hazard! And makes life difficult if you have babies or elderly or disabled people there.
Amy, IMHO, leave the "sunken" living rooms should stay "sunk" and no new ones built in the future.
Stay away! They are accidents waiting to happen IMO.
I think in the right house they can be a cool element. However, not for me and I wouldn't recommend adding one in a new home design, but I'm a "whatever floats your design boat" kind of decorator.
I think it's an interesting idea in theory, but it seems like it would overcomplicate things! I wonder if it's more difficult for cleaning purposes as well?
As a child of the 70’s, I’m all for it but it’s very definitely a personal preference. Trends and styles come, go, come, and go again. It’s important to do what you love.
Let them stay in the past. They are a hazard for tripping and a misstep, especially for babies and seniors.
No, no and no again, keep sunken living rooms back in the past
Hi Amy, I love unique looks so I really appreciate a sunken living room, that being said, we are getting older an I am not sure that it's a good idea to have uneven walking surfaces in ones homes.
No No no leave it in the past. Hard to clean, and can be dangerous for young and old alike.
A BIG NO! I have a friend with one and they spend a fortune getting rid of it!
Dates a house very quickly.
