I need help in updating the 70's Rock Fireplace.

We recently re-did our fireplace but we had a completely different style to start with. We went floor to ceiling with travertine tile and it now reminds me a little of your fireplace in its shape. I think Heidi's fireplace above that she painted is really pretty! If you didn't like the stone and wanted to change it, maybe there is a way to tile over it with travertine or slate tiles, or I've even seen some fireplaces with a different kind of stone material called airstone that looks like stacked stone. Also, maybe just adding a simple wood beam mantel would give you a different look that you're looking for. Not sure what your style is, our fireplace is very modern looking so may not be what you would go for, but it might give you an idea on a mantel if you didn't like the tile: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/fireplace-modern-stone-makeover-before-after-5172369 . @Pam I think the suggestions above are all good. Painting the stones would improve and update the look. If grey is not to your tastes perhaps try a neutral beige - so you don't have to worry about wall colours. While more expensive, redoing the face of the stone is also an option, depends on how much you want to spend, but either will help to update the look.

If you can get or have some wood you can frame it and completely change the look if tat is what you are wanting... if you want to keep the stone you can get some natural color and then glue o cement some dollar store gem's into it o use a broken mirror to put pizazz into it... just suggesting.
