Ice Box to Wine Cabinet
by

Parents old ice box had been used as garage storage forever. They had painted it inside and out ages ago. My brother inherited it and this spring asked if I wanted it. YES!
Here it is, laying on it's side when hubs started restoration.
The inside had multiple layers of "gunk" and paint on it. He used a good paint stripper to get it all off.
Lots of work and patience! He took off all the hardware and polished it. One hinge had to be welded...a good neighbor kindly obliged!
Prep work almost done.
Tung oil finish. My brother had already put heavy duty casters on it.
We left the original wire shelves and put some rubber drawer liner on them. He made a wooden shelf to fit over the drain hole in the side that held the ice. It now holds our wine and glasses! You can still see the wear... where the block of ice slid in...and that's part of the charm.

Swan Road Designs on Aug 23, 2015Nice job. My late husband restored one many years ago. It was nearly identical to the one you have. The oak was so beautiful, as is yours. As a "fun" accessory and because the client had a crazy sense of humor, my husband made an old-fashioned-type ice cube tray and ice cubes...all of oak. It was wrapped in plain paper and put inside for the client to discover. It was a big hit.
