Let's go over the tips, tricks, and hacks I use to keep my entryway wardrobe functioning at its best.

Removing all items from the coat closet

1. Start with a Clean Slate

The first thing you need to do is remove everything from your closet. Take out all the shoes, coats, and anything on the shelves. Once everything is out, you can evaluate all the clutter that was sitting inside the closet and begin sorting through it and deciding what should be kept.

Vacuuming the floor and baseboards of a coat closet

Before going through all that mess, clean the cupboard. Grab a vacuum and clean the floor of the closet as well as the baseboards.

Vacuum off the entire inside including the shelves, ceilings, and corners to get a nice, spotless space.

Next, take a damp rag and wipe down all of the shelves, hanging rack, floor, baseboards, and walls to get a pristine space to work with.

2. Coat Closet Shoe Storage

A great entryway shoe storage idea is to place a shoe organizer at the bottom of the coat closet. Take a look at all the shoes your family has and decide how many pairs of shoes each family member can store in this closet. These should be the shoes that are used most often.

Shoes neatly lined up in a shoe rack

In my family, we typically have four pairs of shoes that are used frequently. Each family member gets a shelf with space for four pairs of shoes.

This has been an amazing idea for shoe storage at the front door; everyone always knows where to find their favorite shoes and no dirt is brought through the house because everyone leaves their shoes in their place at the entrance.

3. Winter Gear Storage Ideas

This is a brilliant hack I learned from my mother and I have passed it on to my kids.

Stuffing a scarf into a sleeve of a coat

To store winter accessories, place your mittens and hat together. Squeeze your scarf into one sleeve of your coat, and then the hat and mitten combination into the other sleeve of the coat.

Placing snow pants and coat onto one hanger

Place your snow pants onto your hanger, and then hang that inside the closet. Your whole outfit is complete.

4. Over the Door Hanging Racks

Over-the-door coat racks are ideal for hanging coats, hats, backpacks, and other items you may need to grab on the go. This type of storage solution is great for small spaces where storage is limited.

Placing wet gloves onto the top of an over-the-door coat rack to allow them to air dry

Over-the-door coat racks can also be used to dry wet gloves or hats after being out in the snow. This is the perfect way to keep your wet items off of the floor and furniture and it allows them to air dry easily.

Hanging brooms and dusters on an over-the-door rack

Another great storage idea is to use the over-the-door racks to hang cleaning tools like brooms and dusters.

Door shoe storage organizer

An over-the-door shoe organizer is also a brilliant solution. It can be used to store hats, gloves, sunglasses, or even cleaning supplies. This type of organizer is usually designed with multiple pockets, which can be used to store a variety of items. By hanging it over the door, you can keep these items organized and easily accessible.

5. Seasonal Storage Option

If you run out of space in your coat closet, store your winter clothes and summer items in a storage bin and tuck it away in the closet, garage, basement or any other storage space you use until it's the season to swap them in and out.

These bins are amazing as they keep everything dry and contained and they stack on top of each other easily.

6. Baskets for Coat Closet Organization

Another way to organize your coat closet is to use plastic baskets. You can even write the name of each family member on the basket so they can reach up and know which one is theirs.

Store hats, gloves, scarves, or anything like that in the basket per family member and place them on a shelf.

7. Laundry Room Storage Idea

A trick that I find useful In the laundry room, is to place a coat hanging rack on the wall, and above it, I attach command hooks so that each family member has their own hook. Then, place the white bins on the hooks to store hats and mittens above the coats.
