Renter Friendly Accent Wall
If you've ever rented you'll probably know the struggle with not being able to make a space completely feel like home. You don't always have creative freedom with doing projects. If so, this project is for you!! All you'll need is some electrical tape - yes you read that correct, scissors and optional tape measure.
Here's my bathroom before - pretty simple. I did paint before I started this but that step is completely optional.
Materials Needed
I purchased my electrical tape from Amazon, but you can find it just about anywhere even the Dollar Tree has it!
I used a roll and a half to complete my wall!
Here's the link to the tape -

More Washi Tape Ideas
Step One - I measured out how big I wanted each "diamond" to be
I marked off 24inches for the whole diamond and then marked off at 12 inches, so every 12 inches for the whole wall. Mark off at the corner of the wall.
Step Two - Add tape
At my 24inch mark I put the tape completely across the wall.
After I did the full piece across I did the smallest piece. This is at the 12inch mark.
Step Three - Cut All Pieces
After I got the biggest and the smallest piece on the wall I eyed out each piece in between. I did this by completing one full "diamond".
My "diamond" has 4 pieces in between the biggest and smallest, giving a total of 9 strips in between each "diamond" not counting the longest piece.
To cut the pieces I took one from the first complete "diamond" I made and cut them all at the same time to ensure they were roughly around the same length. You'll continue this for as many pieces as you need.
I eye balled the distance in between the middle pieces but you could measure it all out if you want.
***SIDE NOTE***
I've done an accent wall with electrical tape before in a different pattern and got a TON of comments on why I didn't use washi tape. That washi tape will hold up better and not "damage" the wall.
Well let me be the first to tell you DON'T use washi tape. I purchased washi tape thinking I'll try something new this time. I got about 60% done and ran out of tape.
Ordered more and within the two days it took to receive the new washi tape I ordered so many pieces were falling off the wall. Pieces were falling off within in that first day of me starting this project.
So unless you want to be pushing the tape back on your wall repeatedly throughout the day, I would not recommend using washi tape.
Bye bye washi tape - you suck lol
Here's the final product! I absolutely LOVE the way this turned out. I love how you can make countless patterns with one simple product. This is completely renter friendly and gives you creative freedom to transforming a space!
This project took me roughly an hour - two hours. Although I have a 3 month old so the amount of time it took me is probably a little longer than it would take most.
Curious about other renter-friendly projects?
Enjoyed the project?

Very clever and economical. It would be fun to use other electrical tape colors for other designs for a child’s room, etc. goid choice of medium that doesn’t leave a sticky residue. It seems to me, after it’s been on for awhile, the tape would leave stickie marks on wall. You might be charged to fix it, when you move.

If that does happen, I would never just leave the wall damaged lol, I’d scrub or sand it off and leave it better than I found it 🤷🏽♀️

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Are you for hire 😂😂
How long did you wait between the paint and the failed washi tape? I've read that it really takes a month for paint to dry, i.e., cure. Perhaps that was the cause of the failure?
Also, fyi to diyers in general, always buy/order twice as much as you think you'll need, unless you've laid out your plan and measured very carefully. Sometimes there may be a slight gradation in color between batches of the product. Look at rolls of color duct tape or wallpaper in a store for examples. If you buy extra, you could return it, or keep it if it is a modest investment, just in case you want to repeat the decor on lamps, occasional tables or other walls.
My bathroom gets very steamy when showering, how well does it stay on in that situation?
