5 Below Rug Turned Boho Wall Hanging

Materials Needed -

Rug - 5 Below

Wooden Dowel - Lowes

String, twine, yarn for hanging

Scissors

Hot glue gun + sticks, glue or sticky tape

Seam ripper (not pictured)

This is the wooden dowel I got from Lowes. The rug is 3x5 and I was hanging it long ways up and down so I needed 3 feet across. This dowel was around $4.50, I was going to get the cheaper poplar wood one, but this oak one was all I could find.

Step One - Lay Out Rug

I laid out the rug to see how I wanted it to hang. I wasn't crazy about the pink color yarn towards the bottom and I didn't like how the dowel was the exact same size as the rug - nothing that can't be fixed though!

I decided I was going to cut off the pink part so to cutting I went!

Step Two - Cut

After cutting the top off I knew I wanted to change up the sides. I wanted the dowel to stick out a bit from the rug. I could have got a longer dowel, but I just simply cut the edge off.

Much better!

Step Three - Fray Edges

After cutting the edges I wanted to add a little texture to the edges. I started off just pulling apart string pieces with my hands and using the point of the scissors to get the string free. I ended up grabbing my seam ripper to make it go a bit faster. This was the part of the project that took the most time. I wanted the fray to be a bit thicker but I was getting a bit uncomfortable sitting on the ground for so long.

Both sides all frayed up - looking so cute!

Step Four - Attach Dowel

I used a hot glue gun to glue the rug to the dowel. As pictured in my materials photo you could also use tack glue or even stick tape would work!

I put a line of glue along the rug and rolled the dowel a few times to completely attach it.

Step Five - Attach String

I used twine I always have on hand to make the "hanger" part of this. I debated using black yarn to pull out the black in the rug but just went with the twine! I can always change it up later on.

To attach the twine I just used the hot glue gun and wrapped the twine around the dowel.

And that's it! A few simple steps and less than $10 in materials and you have yourself a large, beautiful wall hanging!

There's so many cute rugs at 5 Below I might try this with another one and have it go long ways! I love making pieces like this because they take up so much space on a wall with minimal holes, which is perfect if you're renting!
