How to Make an Easy Tin Can Candle Holder Using Dollar Tree Items
Today, I'm going to share with you a quick and easy candle holder made from upcycled tin cans using humble Dollar Tree items. This DIY candle holder is appropriate for fall or any season and would be a great addition to your collection of farmhouse home decor.
This is the sunflower print tin can candle holder we are going to make!
1. Clean & paint the tin can
First, I took a used tin can, cleaned it, and painted it with white acrylic paint. I also took one of the sunflower-printed napkins from Dollar Tree.
2. Separate a ply from the napkin
I separated 1 ply from the napkin, as shown. It is very easy to separate.
3. Apply Mod Podge
Using a foam brush I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge on the painted surface of the tin can.
4. Adhere the napkin
Then, I applied the single ply of the napkin on the tin can and gently pressed the napkin so that the ridges of the tin can be seen clearly.
5. Seal with Mod Podge
The napkin dried well. Then, I applied one coat of Mod Podge for sealing.
6. Stuff the tin can with plastic shopping bags
Next, I stuffed lots of plastic shopping bags until they reached almost the top of the tin can. This way, we are using plastic shopping bags and preventing landfill of the plastic into the environment.
Then, I got caulk from Dollar Tree.
And, I got the white glue from Dollar Tree.
7. Decorate the tin can candle holder
Next, I took jute ribbon and stuck it on the top and bottom of the can using hot glue.
8. Seal the top of the can
I mixed caulk, white glue, and lightweight spackling, and prepared the mixture as shown.
Then, I filled the mixture on top of the stuffed plastic bags and let it dry.
I decorated the candle holder with an electric candle votive candle. You could also use a flame candle.
DIY tin can candle holder
I love the final result of the candle holder. This can be a beautiful addition to your home this fall or any season!
And this way we can re-purpose the used tin can and plastic shopping bags to prevent landfill and protect the environment. Go Green! :)

Hi, very Pretty. Unfortunately, I've found out, not all Dollar Tree's carry the same items in their stores. So Aggravating, when you have your heart set on making something you've seen online!!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I am curious about the caulking & glue mixture. You first mentioned only caulk & glue & then you also mentioned light weight spackling. How much of each please & did you use 2 items or 3 items? Thank you. Want to try this but confused on the topper sealing instructions.
