Let's begin with what you need.
Supply list:
20MM wood beads - I purchased mine from Amazon - you will need 40 beads for this project.
13 mini wood cubes from The Dollar Tree
4 bamboo skewers from The Dollar Tree
2 square wood or shadow box signs from The Dollar Tree or Michaels. I purchased mine from Michaels.
First you will place 10 beads on each skewer and make sure you leave a little room at the bottom to place inside of the wood shadow box. I'd say it's about a inch from the start of the skewer.
For a better, more stable and permanent hold use wood glue when placing the beads. This will ensure the beads stay and don't move when painting. My wood glue preference is the Gorilla fast drying wood glue. Just use a paint brush that doesn't get much love from you. lol
Once your beads are attached, you should have 4 bead skewers that look like this. Great job!
Next you will use that same wood glue to piece together your lantern topper. Glue 3 wood cubes in one row giving you 3 rows of 3 cubes. Then glue those together so you have a 9 piece cube sqaure.
Then you will take the last 4 wood cubes and glue those on top making your lantern top. Set it aside to dry with the beaded skewers for about 15 minutes.
Next, grab your shadow box signs and if needed remove the sawtooth hangers and any cord or twine on the back.
Fill the holes with wood filler. This one goes on pink but dries a natural brown color which lets you know it's ready to be sanded.
Then it's time to paint! Use this Antique Wax color from Waverly. It can be purchased at Walmart. If you don't have access to this, just use a brown paint color and mix it with water to get your desired stain look.
One paint coat for these 3 items.
We'll use white chalk paint to cover the bead skewers. I use Rust-oleum white chalk paint but use what you have.
Once dry, this is what it should look like. I use a foam core to put them in so it's easier to handle and dry.
Now it's time to assemble the pieces. Take your glue gun and put a generous amount in the corner of the bottom pieces then place the skewer on top. Then put more hot glue on the skewer so it holds in place.
Repeat this step 3 more times for the remainder of the corners.
Once the hot glue dries, flip the piece and place the skewer bottoms in the four corners of the second wood box.
Repeat the step to hot glue down the skewers to the 4 corners using a generous amount for a last hold.
Finally hot glue the topper.
Once a little pressure is added to secure the topper, this beautiful lantern is complete.
Style this any way you like and dress it up for any season. It's a great piece to have for table decor! I absolutely love this and have already made 2 more! Enjoy and happy crafting friends! Be sure to follow DIY with Amber on all social media platforms for more!

This rustic hand-made design is really nice. Aesthetically, I think the stark white beads cheapen the loo
To bring the lantern to another level that emphasizes its craftmanship, I would choose other treatments.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I do have one question: why did you use the glue gun to attach the skewers but gorilla wood glue for the beads and topper? Is it ok to use the gorilla wood glue to attach the skewers to the wooden boxes also or is the glue gun stronger?
What size are the wood cubes? On Amazon, they have 1/2 inch and higher.
