Looking to freshen up your home with easy and affordable spring decor? This DIY dollar store topiary is the perfect way to add a little greenery to your space—without spending a ton.

Using just a few items you can grab at your local dollar store, this simple project comes together in under an hour and looks adorable on an entryway table, kitchen counter, or even your front porch.

Turn a wooden mallet into a topiary with this clever dollar store DIY idea

Tools & Materials:

Everything for this project came from the dollar store (yes, even the mallet!), making it super budget-friendly.

Here’s what you’ll need to create your own faux moss topiary:

  • 1 wooden mallet (this will be your “tree trunk”)
  • 1 galvanized bucket or small flower pot
  • 1 Styrofoam ball (medium or large, depending on the look you want)
  • Faux moss or reindeer moss
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Burlap ribbon or any decorative bow
  • Small stones or pebbles (optional, for weight and aesthetics)
  • Utility knife or craft knife (for shaping the Styrofoam)
Use a wooden mallet as the stem for your dollar store topiary base.

1. Place the Mallet in the Bucket

Flip your wooden mallet upside down and place the handle into the center of your galvanized bucket.

This will act as the base and trunk of your topiary tree.

Shave a space in the Styrofoam ball so it sits snugly on the topiary stem.

2. Prep the Styrofoam Ball

Use a utility knife to carefully shave a small flat area on the Styrofoam ball.

This will allow it to sit more securely on the top of the mallet handle (dowel-style).

Hot glue secures the topiary ball to your homemade wooden stem.

3. Attach the Ball to the Mallet Handle

Apply hot glue to the shaved part of the ball and press it onto the top of the mallet handle.

Hold it in place for a few seconds until the glue sets.

Apply faux moss all around the ball to create your DIY moss topiary.

4. Cover the Ball with Moss

Now for the fun part—cover the entire Styrofoam ball with faux moss.

Work in small sections, applying hot glue and gently pressing on pieces of moss until the whole surface is covered.

An easy spring craft anyone can make on a budget!

5. Add a Decorative Bow

Once the moss is in place, tie a bow using burlap ribbon (or whatever ribbon you like).

A burlap ribbon bow adds a rustic touch to your dollar store topiary.

Hot glue it to the base of the ball, where it meets the stem. It adds a cute, finished touch.

Add decorative stones to weigh down your topiary and complete the look.

6. Fill the Bucket with Stones

To give your topiary weight and a more natural look, add some small stones or pebbles into the bucket around the mallet handle.

This will help it stand upright and adds an earthy vibe.
