DIY Chemical-Free Essential Oil Reed Diffuser (Perfect for Fall!)
Want your home to smell amazing without synthetic chemicals?
This easy DIY essential oil reed diffuser is a natural, budget-friendly way to keep your space smelling fresh—especially in the fall.
I love essential oils for their cozy, seasonal scents and their benefits. So I made a simple, chemical-free diffuser using things I already had at home: bamboo skewers, a glass bottle, water, alcohol, and my favorite oils.
No flames, no plugins—just good vibes in a bottle.
Tools and Materials:
- Gin / Vodka / Alcohol
- Water
- Bottle
- Bamboo Skewers
- Scissors
- Washi Tape (optional)
- Measuring Spoons
- Funnel (not pictured)
- Essential Oils (I used Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Cinnamon Bark, & Sweet Orange)

1. Measure Your Bamboo Skewers
Start by placing one bamboo skewer into your bottle or jar.
This helps you figure out the ideal length so the sticks don’t tip over or look too tall.
📝 Tip: You want the skewers to stick out a few inches above the rim of the bottle so the scent can disperse easily into the air.
2. Cut the Skewers
Once you've figured out the perfect height, trim the bamboo skewers to size using scissors or garden shears.
I made all of mine the same length, but you could totally mix it up for a more whimsical look.
📝 Tip: Cutting them at a slight angle at the bottom can help the skewers absorb the oil mixture more efficiently.
3. Add Washi Tape Flags (Optional)
This part is totally optional, but if you’re feeling a little crafty, why not dress up your skewers with a pop of washi tape?
Just fold a small piece of washi tape over the top of each skewer, press it together, and trim the ends into your favorite shape — triangle flags, rectangles, or whatever you like!
✨ It’s a fun way to make your diffuser look a little more polished, especially if it's going to sit out on a shelf or countertop.
4. Add Water to the Bottle
Now it’s time to start mixing!
Using a funnel (if you have one—it definitely helps avoid spills), fill your bottle almost to the top with water. I left a little room to add the alcohol and oils, but you can always adjust the levels later.
📝 Pro tip: Use distilled or filtered water for the cleanest results, especially if you’re planning to refill your diffuser often.
5. Add Alcohol + Essential Oils
To help the oils travel up the reeds and diffuse into the air, add 3–4 tablespoons of alcohol to the bottle. Vodka, gin, or rubbing alcohol all work just fine. A good rule of thumb is about 1 tablespoon of alcohol per ¼ cup of water.
Next, add your essential oils! I used about 20 drops total—divided between rosemary, eucalyptus, cinnamon bark, and sweet orange for a cozy, autumn-inspired blend.
📝 You can totally customize your scent based on the season or your mood. Lavender and lemon for spring? Yes, please!
6. Add the Reeds
Drop your bamboo skewers (a.k.a. DIY reeds) into the bottle.
The liquid will begin soaking up into the skewers, and over the next few hours, your space will start smelling amazing—no plug-ins or flames required!
✨ Pro Tip: Flip the reeds every few days to refresh the scent and keep things smelling fresh.
