Steps
Baking soda and Christmas decor? You bet!
1. Remove the tops
First, remove the caps from the tops of the ornament balls. Just give them a little twist and they should pop right off.
2. Mix flour and baking soda
Mix together equal parts flour and our magic ingredient, baking soda.
3. Spray-paint the ornaments
Next, we're going to spray-paint the ornaments. Strong paint colors work well in this project because the color will become more muted and subtle in the finished ornament.
4. Dip in the flour and baking soda mixture
After you spray paint the ornament, drench it in the flour and baking soda mixture. I advise doing this one ornament at a time and wear some gloves. It can get a little messy. You can spray-paint the entire ornament and dunk it or spray it in sections.
5. Reattach the tops
After painting and dunking, let the ornaments dry. Once dry, put the cap back on the ornament.
6. Dust off the excess
Using a small paintbrush, gently brush off the excess flour mixture. I have to be honest, I felt a little bit like an archaeologist!
7. Tie string to hang the ornaments
Tie a simple ribbon or string through the ornament cap and hang on your Christmas tree.
DIY flocked ornaments
Once dusted off, your faux-flocked ornament is complete. For a simple holiday display, place multiple flocked ornaments in a bowl surrounded by greenery or simply hang them on your Christmas tree.
