Granddaughter dyed hair black and ruined my brand new vanity top! I've tried bleach and nail polish remover. Nothing is working! Is it a complete losd!

The pics make it look yellow due to lighting but it's not. It is/was very white. Yes I'm ready to scream!icon

Oh Goodness! Bless your heart! Contact a speciality countertop store, and they should be able to tell you what to do. Good luck!

    • Janet Janet on Nov 24, 2019

Yes it has been upsetting! I'll try all the great suggestions from this great community here! You all are the best! Thanks LGK!

  • If brand new, you are still under warranty. Call the store where you purchased and go from there. And never let her dye her hair there again without covering up first with plastic, and old towels over that to avoid any damage.

Yes call the manufacturer. Don't tell them you tried nail polish remover or bleach as both could void your warranty.

    • Janet Janet on Nov 24, 2019

Kelli I'm afraid telling them that my granddaughter did this might void it also! Lol But can't to ask! Thanks!

That happened to me one time, I was dying my hair black and I spilled it on my walls and on my bathroom sink, I said too myself I will clean it up later, LOL!!! But what a no-no!! so I went and bought Magic Erasers, the hair dye came right off the walls and off my bathroom sink, You can maybe try the Magic Erasers, and see if it will come off, Good Luck Lisa

I have those on hand. I'll give it a try! Thanks so much Lisa!

Or you can try oven and grill cleaner.

    • Is that a lye based product? Lye can damage many surfaces, and it will leave some NASTY burns.

Please be very careful using the stuff. It’s good for a lot of things, but cleaning countertops isn’t on the list.

      Stay safe!

Or you can try peroxide, or oven and grill cleaner.

What type of surface is it?

  • Debi53 Debi53 on Nov 22, 2019

Places that sell salon products carry a hair dye remover. I don't know if it will work on your sink, but it might be worth a try.

    • Janet Janet on Nov 24, 2019

Great suggestion! Thank you! I will certainly be giving them a call! Thanks Debi53!

  • Redcatcec Redcatcec on Nov 22, 2019

I have used lemon slices with the juice, it took awhile but it worked.

    • Janet Janet on Nov 24, 2019

I have fresh lemon on hand to. I'll be busy tomorrow trying all these great suggestions! Thanks Redcatcec!

  • Melanie Melanie on Nov 23, 2019

It's too late now to try this, but for future reference hair dye will remove hair dye stains while still fresh. Magic erasers work for older stains also.

    • Janet Janet on Nov 24, 2019

I'll have to remember that as my granddaughter is quit the hair coloring enthusiast and very talented at it I might say but doesn't give thought to the mess! Thanks Melanie!

  • I have no idea how to clean it up. Sorry. I read the comments and many of them sound like they will work.

In four years, is it yet cleaned to your satisfaction? Ha! I’m four years, I bet it isn’t the only stain on the counter.

Yes I found something that worked! I used the hair bleach that she used on her black hair to strip the black dye off of her hair. So I had an ah ha moment and mixed up a mixture of hair bleach, put a good bit of the paste on all the spots, let set over night and they were gone! 🤔😀. And yes I did have to repeat that a few more times for a couple of years. But we sold our house last year. And the sink looked amazing. No stains at all!

Hi Janet, hope this helps you.

Mix some baking soda into a bowl of warm water until it becomes a paste. Using a microfiber cloth, spatula or applicator, place the paste onto the stain and gently rub it in until the paste covers the entire stain. Let the baking soda sit overnight to remove the hair dye chemicals.

Thanks Deb! It's been a while since I posted that question and since then I have sold my home. But I did find a solution for the dye stain. I used the reverse of dye and used a blond color with bleach the hair. Made a thick paste, put on the stains and left overnight. The morning it looked like new! That was about a year before I sold the home and the vanity still looked like new the day it sold. ☺️

Heavy Duty Grill cleaner should work or peroxide and baking soda.

  • Janice Janice on Mar 27, 2025

Pour a bit of hydrogen peroxide onto the stain and cover with paper towel so the peroxide stays in place. After soaking for a while the stain will likely disappear. This just worked on a nicotine stained countertop in one of my rentals.

To remove hair dye stains from a porcelain vanity top, try a paste of baking soda and water, rubbing alcohol, or a cream cleanser, and scrub gently, then rinse thoroughly.

Keep doing it every day once or twice, it will fade!

Removing hair dye stains from a porcelain-top vanity requires a gentle yet effective approach to avoid damaging the surface. Here are the best methods:

    1. Baking Soda & Water Paste (Gentle Scrub)

    1. Mix baking soda with a little water to form a paste.
    2. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for 5–10 minutes.
    3. Gently rub with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth (avoid abrasive pads).
    4. Rinse and wipe clean.

    2. Hydrogen Peroxide & Baking Soda (For Stubborn Stains)

    1. Sprinkle baking soda on the stain.
    2. Pour hydrogen peroxide over it to create a mild foaming reaction.
    3. Let sit for 10 minutes, then gently scrub and rinse.

    3. Magic Eraser (Quick Fix)

    1. Wet a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser with warm water.
    2. Gently rub the stain in circular motions until it lifts.
    3. Rinse and wipe dry.

    4. Rubbing Alcohol or Acetone (For Darker Dyes)

    1. Dampen a cotton ball or soft cloth with rubbing alcohol or acetone (nail polish remover).
    2. Blot and rub gently on the stain.
    3. Wipe clean with warm water.

    5. Commercial Cleaners (For Tough Stains)

    1. Use a porcelain-safe cleaner like Bar Keepers Friend, Soft Scrub, or CLR.
    2. Apply, let sit for a few minutes, then gently scrub and rinse.

    What to Avoid

Bleach – It can discolor the vanity surface.

Abrasive scrubbers – These can scratch the porcelain.

    Barkeepers Friend

  • Start with baking soda mixed with a little water and gently rub the stain using a soft cloth. If that doesn’t work, try hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol applied carefully and wiped clean right away. Avoid abrasive pads so you don’t scratch the porcelain surface.
