You can screw in fasteners but I would be a bit scared of making the shelf and contents too heavy. What about some cool looking metal supports to help hold the weight?
Here's a good tutorial on this topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZdJ-ix0Vwo
You can drill into either but you'll need to use a drill bit made for brick or mortar. I would ask someone at the hardware store. Also you'll need screws made for brick.
You will need to rent a hammer drill at a local equipment rental shop or Home Depot with a large masonry bit, and then purchase threaded bolts to fit those holes and epoxy glue them in..... then drill matching holes into the shelf and once the glue has set up on the brick end . epoxy the other end in.... if the bolt you got are very long you may need to cut them down a bit using a sawzaw with metal blade or a hacksaw. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip1ylTo4qMU

Take a photo of the fireplace and the beam (with dimensions and weight) to your hardware store or home improvement store and ask for their recommendations for the best results.
